I went on one in 1996. One of the greatest vacations I ever took.
I even got to "work" with the crew-man the tiller, assist in navigation, etc.
Went from Ft. Lauderdale to St. John, U.S.V.I. via a couple other ports of call.
FANTASTIC!!!
Just leave your inhibitions at home and have a great time. Don't worry about how much money you spend in whatever ports you're in either. Remember-you're not doing this to count pennies, you're doing it to make memories.
HAVE FUN!

This has just so much potential for going hopelessly wrong...Wino you know wrote:I went on one in 1996. One of the greatest vacations I ever took.

wow - this seems like it could be a blast. Just now to find enough peeps to do it with me. Hmmmmm.
"Oh all the money that e'er I spent, I spent it in good company.
And all the harm that I ever did, Alas it was to none but me.
And since it falls, unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, 'Goodnight and Joy be with you all.'"

We've done a couple of these!
The Windjammers are great.
I'd never do a cruise any other way!
We did the Mandalay from Grenada and the Flying Cloud in the BVI.
Rooms are small and food is nothing like on a big cruise ship, but the number of people on board is small enough that you get to know everyone. They plan all kinds of fun activities and they visit islands not frequented by the big ships!
If you get the chance GO!

I have done several and loved all of them. It's not the same as the jumbo cruise lines and that's what makes it so fun. You don't see the islands as an American tourist with 5000 other tourists crowding into a small port town, yuo get to see the islands as a member of a small group. On my first Windjammer cruise we, the passengers, decided we didn't like the itinerary so we voted to switch it and the captain did so. On my second we stopped at a little island that only had wild goats and wild pigs and while we snorkeled the crew set up a wonderful pig roast on the beach.
I once read a description of Windjammer Cruises and it was something like "If you like roughing it, then this is the cruise for you." While there is some truth to that, no fancy shows and no "gourmet" dinners/buffetts, the food is good and lots of it and the entertainment is great. Frequently the passengers are called upon to provide some of the entertainment, other times you will have a steel drum band or a floating ministrel who comes aboard and sings the night away. In someways it is like a seagoing camp for adults.
