Corian vs Granite

Ok all.. as you can see from my signature I am building a house. We were looking at granite originally because my mom has it in her house and I love it. We thought it would be affordable to get granite because of the "great connection" that one of the builders got. When we got the price it was more than twice what we were told by the builder. Needless to say I started looking at other options. We got a quote on Corian and it is about $1000 less than the granite but still more than we originally budgeted. Does anyone have experience with these products? Is the granite worth the extra money or do I go with the Corian. I am ready to pull all my hair out over this house... where's the booze

haha!!!
i was just having this conversation the other day as we were picking counters for our bathrooms.
granite is an obvious selling point when it's time to sell your house, but corian is not a bad material either (at least that i'm aware of, but i'm definitely no expert).
you could go with the laminate/formica countertops, some of which look nice and are far less expensive than both those options, but obviously... it isn't corian or granite.
i think granite in the kitchen looks gorgeous, and i'd pick corian for the bathrooms, but that's just me.
it comes down to what you like, what you thinks best, and what fits the best into your budget. kitchens and bathrooms definitely sell houses, so that's something to keep in mind.

Why would anyone build a house with the intention of selling it down the line? We spent years looking for the ideal location and saving money so we would only have to go through this sh*t once. I completely intend to die in the house we are building (hopefully not for another 60 years or so).

We have Corian in the kitchen and LOVE it!
Granite wasn't an option, but we did upgrade to Corian and are not sorry.

some of us aren't as fortunate to get to live forever in the first house we buy.

Have you looked into Silestone? It's a man-made material that mimics granite but is less expensive. Some of the patterns are beautiful and it has a great warranty. Some say it's a better alternative than Corian.

Thanks everyone for your replies.. I find it ironic that the poll is dead even.
The biggest reason I am being indecisive is cost. I cannot do formica as I already ordered and paid for undermount sinks in anticipation of the granite. Is the granite worth the extra $1000 I guess is where I am at... ugghhh..
I looked into Silestone but it is ending up more expensive for some reason.
ph4ever - what makes you say granite all the way??
springparrot - is there anything you don't care for about the corian?? How does it clean up/wear?
rednekkPH - unfortunatly this isn't my final move. I am 25 and this is my first house.... my final house will be somewhere on the water!
Thanks everyone for your comments so far.. keep the pros and cons comming!

I'm 29, and this is my 1st...and last. And it's right where I wanted it to be - in the mountains with no civilization in sight!

I work for my family which is a KItchen and Bath remodeling company. I am not a salesman but rather handle the day to day business operations.
First off, both are very nice.
Corian was very popluar years ago, but in the last two years I would say, Grantite is the trend. Granite has become much cheaper than it was, thus taking business from corian products.
Corian does show much more wear and tear over the years than granite. I understand both of these are not cheap and is a tough choice. If money is not an object, I go with the granite, but I understand it is quite expensive.
I'm not sure if I helped any, Good Luck.

Ah hell, the bank has lots of money, and they're just dying to give it away

. Good luck, and bless you for actually wanting to do it a second time.

Yeah... its amazing how fast it went up.. now we are in the slow finishing stage. We should get interior paint and cabinets before the end of the week. Exterior paint should happen soon too.. this is why I have to decide on countertops ASAP.

at this point...spend a little extra and get what you wanted in the first place. In the scheme of things...what's anothe grand?
Seriously though...you will regret not getting what you want.
I was going to suggest getting formica to start and then upgrading when you have some more cash flow....but since that is not an option...go with the granite. I have it in my kitchen and it can't compare to corian...I cook in alot of people's homes and granite alwasy loosk the best...corian shows wear and tear!

I hear ya girlie girl! We've just been doing 2 of our bathrooms so my last 2 weeks have been tile, grout, shower doors, bathtubs, paint, and vanities.
