St John. 2/3's of the island is a National Park which makes it very nice. Also it is still part ofthe US therfore safer, not that any of these locations are not safe, with the exception of Aruba. I wouldn't go there on a bet after last year.

I would consider one of the out islands in the Bahamas. Eleuthera, Crooked island, Acklins, Long, Cat, etc. Getting there is quick (1 hr from South Florida on a sea plane), and is cheap. Lots of friends I know rent their homes on the beach for $500-$2000 per week total (depending on the size of the house) Most of them have at least three bed rooms, so that can be split to be pretty cheap. Most of the ones I rent are about $600 per week with 3 bed rooms and are on the beach. Lots of fun for a group of friends.
And LOTS to do in the out islands,
Diving, spearfishing, surfing, flats fishing, off shore fishing, beach strolling, relaxing, and eating good local food Conch salad!!!

we travel at that time of the year since it's our anniversary. as others have stated,do be aware that it is close to the height of hurricane season (9/10). we had hugo pay a visit on our honeymoon.

i would go to the grenadines ( sp) or southern caribbean chain. meaning barbados, st. vincent, etc. for some reason hurricanes tend to cross the ocean and hit the islands farther north.
i went to barbados last year and it was very reasonable ( with air fare, $800 ea. for a 5 night stay in mid january). stayed at casurina resort. it's located on the southwestern tip, christ church, st. lawrence gap. the beach is good, the waves are big. the resort is decent but food is only ok. however, the bonus is that the rooms are suites. ours was a 2 bedroom with a full kitchen, living room/diningroom and a large patio. we bought food, had breakfast and some lunches at the suite. we didn't need a car because in the gap there are many resturants within a walking distance. the bus that will take you into the capitol runs just down the street.
it's not 4 star but it was fun and clean!! you can pm me and we can discuss further.

If I was single and wanted to go somewhere different, I would check out Club Med on the island of Provo, Turks and Caicos.

My wife and I went to Provo a couple of years ago and could hear all the fun they were having at Club Med from our boring hotel. Plus it was the nicest beach I have ever seen.

I concur! Somewhere like Costa Rica would be so much better than some over-run, touristy Caribbean Island. I was in Antigua for a week in October for a friend's wedding and although it was a fun trip at an all-inclusive with lots of fun people, I would never choose to do something like that again. JMHO though...

Given your budget and the fact that it sounds like you aren't too worried about hurricanes (BE SURE TO GET INSURANCE!) I would suggest renting a house in the Bahamas and relax on the beach and enjoy life for a week. There are lots of options and most are either on or near a beach and the cost per person for renting a house is generally less then that of a cruise or resort. If you are doing a cruise, I would second the Windjammer suggestion.

I'd go for a small cruise (e.g. windjammer type) through the British Virgin Islands...wonderful!! Otherwise, there are several places with the all-inclusive deal.
