Since we moved into our new-to-us house almost two years ago, we have lived without anything more than the basic TV channels. No cable. No dish. Nada. It was free at our old place, so we happily endulged ourselves with as much of the stuff as possible.
Knowing we'd actually have to pay for it when we moved, we decided to go without for a while, just to see what it was like, and spend our $40 extra a month a little more wisely.
The toughest part was definitely the kids. No Disney Channel. No Nick. The closest thing she had to pop-culture cartoons is what is shown on Saturday mornings and anything on PBS. It was a little tough at first, but since we're pretty strict about watching TV at our house anyway (none on school nights for the kiddos), it really wasn't that bad.
So, as many of you know, for the last few weeks, we have been living with Matt's grandparents. It definitely could be worse, but one thing I really looked forward to was having cable again. The kids have enjoyed it, especially having Disney and Nick propogandizing us once again.
I've watched some HGTV and some FX (that Mini Cooper movie has been on at least 4 times since we've been there). I've watched countless reruns of Law & Order SVU (some Turner network) and even caught episodes of CSI: Las Vegas that I've missed on Spike. And, wait, there's more. I've even *gasp* watched a few episodes of has-been Real World/Road Rules peeps on MTV's Gauntlet II (I watched the first Gauntlet religiously a few years ago). Shhh. Don't tell anyone.
My conclusion: There's nothing I'm missing on cable. I do wish there was a programming package available for JUST movies (no comercials of course), quality children's programming, and not all the other garbage. If it exists, please let me know, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to keep spending my $40 extra a month elsewhere. Like, on McDonald's french fries.
