OK we decided to add Kauai to our Hawaiian Islands vacation.
Anyone have any "must sees"???
Anyone have any "must sees"???
Will do! You still planning to be my guide on OahuSchoolGirlHeart wrote:not a clue.... haven't been there, YET....
bring back info for the rest of us.
We've stayed on the north side of the island. It's not as popular and much more quiet than the south side but it really grew on us. We stayed just past Hanelai Bay--quite a ride from the airport so we pretty much stayed put, but we enjoyed the balance of activity and relaxing. At the very end of the road is a state park with beach and hiking trails up along the west coast. If you hike, make sure you bring plenty of snacks and water. Also did a hike/kayak trip (Princeville Ranch, I think) that was really good. They told you about the flora/fauna along the way and you hiked to a nice water hole where they fed you a really nice lunch. The lighthouse was also nice but that was probably because the school of dolphins swimming around while we were there put on a nice show.nutmeg wrote:OK we decided to add Kauai to our Hawaiian Islands vacation.

Thanks! We will be staying on the east coast. But we plan on getting around the island as much as possibleJollymom21 wrote:We've stayed on the north side of the island. Have a great time -- IMHO you can't go wrong visiting anyplace in Hawaii!!
Aloha! Thought of a couple of more things--one thing we didn't get to because of distance was the "Little Grand Canyon" which I believe is on the south west side of the island. We heard it was really great. The Fern Grotto is probably near where you'll be and is probably more touristy but still nice (esp. since we got to see a wedding while there). Aww factor!!:)nutmeg wrote:Thanks! We will be staying on the east coast. But we plan on getting around the island as much as possibleJollymom21 wrote:We've stayed on the north side of the island. We will be staying close to the Wialua River and the Spouting Horn is not too far either I believe. We plan to Kayak the river and see the fern grotto. Everyone raves about the canyon so we'll try to see that as well. We are going to try to do some geocaching while we are that so that should get us out and about.Wino you know wrote:You should see the fern grottos on the North Shore-
Of course, Wiamea Canyon is Kauai's biggest attraction. It's called "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific." Go there once and you'll see why.
I also recommend a boat trip on the Wialua River.
A trip to the Spouting Horn too.
One more thing-90% of the island is inaccessible by land-the only way around the island is the highway that circumvents the coast line. You really should take a helicopter tour over the island, which includes a flyover of Mt. Waialeale (pronounced Y-ALI-ALI). It's the wettest spot on earth with an average annual rainfall of just over 500 inches.
Whatever you do, have fun, and when you get back, let me know how you liked it.
It's like with anything, I guess-there's never enough time to do everything. It sounds like you have lots of fun already planned, so I know you're going to have a great time. Of course, you can always check the brochures when you get there for intresting things to see if you get curious. But three MUSTS while you're there-nutmeg wrote:We will be staying close to the Wialua River and the Spouting Horn is not too far either I believe. We plan to Kayak the river and see the fern grotto. You bet! You probably won't be able to stop me from talking about it!Wino you know wrote:It's like with anything, I guess-there's never enough time to do everything. the Wialua River boat cruise,
Wiamea Canyon
Helicopter tour of the interior of the island
I don't know how long you'll be there, but those three things you should be able to do in just two days, leaving the rest of the time to see the Fern Grottos, Spouting Horn, and whatever else you decide.
Be sure to tell me all about it when you get back. I haven't been jealous of anything in quite a while.
Do the Lava Slide.. (same one as on South Pacific)nutmeg wrote:OK we decided to add Kauai to our Hawaiian Islands vacation.
