one of my fave non Jimmy performers, Hank Jr is a bigtime republican (big suprise  ) and has even made songs for Bush campaign (We are Bush/Cheney) and I, speaking as a registered independent with democrat leanings, couldn't care less.
I've seen him a couple of times in concert in the last few years and he has not said the first thing political.

Plenty of musical performers have been doing this for years and I have never noticed any alienation amongst the fans.I've attended concerts by outspoken artists from both ends of the political spectrum but when I enter the voting booth I vote with my own conscience, not theirs. I imagine most other music fans do the same thing.

I do not agree.. two words Jackson Browne

Wait two more Linda Ronstat..
I said plenty, not all. :D I still remain a fan of both, however.

imagine this...after buffett plays 'why dont we get drunk and screw' he goes into a rant about middle east oil or something of the like, to a crowd with parrots on their heads, cheeseheads, pirates, guys in coconut bras and grass skirts, elvis impersonator etc. etc......Doesnt really make sense to go into some political rant....democrat or republican.

Yes, I agree coming down too hard on a political side can turn a fan's stomach. Entertainer's entertain for a living. We pay them good money because we enjoy their music. If they want to get political, include it in a song's message, but don't go into a political rant from the stage when ostensibally you have fans from both sides of the political aisle in your audience (Ex. Linda Ronstadt, Dixie Chicks).
And for those of you that don't think that Jimmy Buffett brings his politics to the stage, read this (transcripted from my bootleg of the October, 29th 2005 Las Vegas tour closer). . .

"I'm not getting out of Las Vegas without doing an Elvis song. We boys from Mississippi have to keep the tradition going, so, ahem, here's one of my favorites and we send this out tonight to Scooter Libby and Karl Rove - IN JAIL!."
"(Cue the music, Jailhouse Rock) 'W' threw a party at the county jail, Dickie's prison band it begins to wail. . . Scooter turns to Karl and says Nix, Nixon; you want to stick around while I get my kicks on, Let's Rock"

On one hand you gotta laugh and say "Cute Jimmy, very clever", but on the other hand was that really nessessary? Libby and Rove are accused at this point. . . I don't recall them being tried yet. Has Rove even been brought up on charges? What happened to innocent until proven guilty?
By the way, after that song, JB and the boys ripped into another overly political artist's song, Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days". Good song. I bought the album, but once again, I don't buy into Bruce's politics.

Stick to the music boys (and girls)!

Communicado asked. . . just throwing out my two cents.
Also just pointing out, Jimmy isn't exactly quiet about his political views.

Cat Stevens converted to Islam and quit at the height of his career.
I don't think it had much to do with politics

I wouldn't call this political commentary. He's making light of current events, at best. It's similar to what Jay Leno or Letterman do in their openings, I'd hardly call those guys political...
