Re: Staph Infections
Mal, please be very careful with staph!! Steve gave himself one, when we lived in Denver, and we almost lost him. They had to call in Infectious Disease Control because he let it go too long. The doc told him if he had waited another 8 hours, he would have lost his leg.buffettbride wrote:Anyone ever had one?
Hubby has his 2nd one in a month. The first was on his hand and now he has to icky thingies on his leg. He's goin' to the Dr. next week, just didn't know if any BNrs have experience in this area.
He's been soaking it in empsom (sp?) salt... any other suggestions?

He's leaving for the Dr. right now. His appointment is in about 30 mins, so I'll know more around noon MT.Jodibug wrote:Mal, please be very careful with staph!! What Buggie said, AND....
The constant pain and lack of mobility the circulation problems have cause Norma, is nothing I would want anybody to have to go through. If it gets to the point of cellulitis, he will have leg problems the rest of his life

It was either cellulitis or folliculitus is what the doc said last time. He's seeing a specialist instead of his PCP this time, so hopefully they will be more helpful. His PCP was very non-specific last time.Cubbie Bear wrote:What Buggie said, AND....

He doesn't seem to be in nearly as much pain this time and has much more mobility. His hand was just all sortsa gnarly right before Christmas (week of the Aspen show actually), but it's the same looking sort of wound he had then.
It's icky gross.

*ouch*
Is he back from the Dr. yet?
How do you get these kinds of infections? I imagine from a cut or something and you get the germs in the wound???
Whenever I get a cut or something, I immediately swipe it with hydrogen peroxide, then put Neosporin or Polysporin on it....think that'll slow the little staphies down?

Ok. Update from hubby.
It most definitely is a staph infection. They took samples from it to determine which kind it is and we'll know in a few days. Some are resistant to antibiotics and some are not, plus, he did get an RX for a stronger antibiotic than last time (but no shots in the butt).
If he does have the resistant kind, then he has a few options based on that kind of infection. One is weird nasal swab medicine applications or (depending on the type of infection) a week-long stay in the hospital on an IV drip. Ish.
We're supposed to continue to watch it for the telltale red streaking and get him to the ER right away if we see those.

Dr. said that Neosporin is basically worthless against staph, once you already have the infection. Doc says is pretty hard to always determine the exact source, but yes, general good hygeine and cleaning will keep most infections at bay. Staph can come from any number of places (as I'm learning) and many people naturally carry it in their nose/throat. Another culprit is mold (which we just had extensive mold mitigation work done in our house), so we're looking into that as well. We also have 2 little kids that get exposed to god knows what at school and day care, so we'll probably never know for sure.citcat wrote:*ouch*

Like many bugs, staph is around in many places so you'll never be able to avoid it completely. It's just a matter of the staph finding the right opportunity/conditions (injury, weak immune system, etc.) to "take hold" and cause an infection. What makes staph worse than many other bugs is the severity of problems it can cause and the difficulty in getting rid of it.buffettbride wrote:Dr. said that Neosporin is basically worthless against staph, once you already have the infection.
