I'm glad he went in, Mal.
A guy I used to work with got one of those nasty resistant staph infections. He was able to be treated outpatient, but had to have like a portocath in his chest and they basically mainlined the antibiotics....ugh. You guys will be in my thoughts.....

HEy - tell him not to play in the moldy trash anymore.
"Oh all the money that e'er I spent, I spent it in good company.
And all the harm that I ever did, Alas it was to none but me.
And since it falls, unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, 'Goodnight and Joy be with you all.'"

Wow? Really? The dermatologist said this would be in-patient all the way, and they have to inform the center for disease control :o :o . you get a private room and all and everyone wears plastic clothes to treat you/visit you! :-?

i realllllllllllly hope it's not that kind. :(

How do you get these kinds of infections? I imagine from a cut or something and you get the germs in the wound??? :o :o :o
Whenever I get a cut or something, I immediately swipe it with hydrogen peroxide, then put Neosporin or Polysporin on it....think that'll slow the little staphies down? :-?
when I got my tattoos...I had to sign a paper stating that I understood NOT to use either of those products you mention..but to use bacatracin...because the two you mention (neo and poly) will seal any germs that might possibly left on the area...which evidently bacatracin doesn't..

you have to be careful with tattoos as they can become infected very easily...

I've been very careful with the use of neo and poly both since then...and the tatts healed with no problems...

hmmm your atrist didn't tell you about not using neosporin? I've used her twice and both times she was quite adamant about using the bacatracin for that very reason..

bad place for a botched tatt...is/was it salvagable ?

i can't remember what the guy said about what to put on it. i think i remember him telling it was OK to use neosporin. i'm not positive though.

it's covered by most of the clothes that i wear, so it's not a huge deal. it doesn't look horrible, but it's not a good tattoo by any means. most of the color flaked off as the infection cleared. it was really hard for me to reach it to treat for it properly.

I also have a horror story of a bad boo-boo turned evil . .

bout 2 years ago I got a regular looking bite/sore on my left hand . . .no biggie . . but within 3 days it had spread to all but two of my fingers and the boo-boo had covered the entire top of my hand . . .and then it did the same damage to my right hand . . .

Sunday night . . it literally thought my hands would explode from the swelling , they looked like two balloons with fingernails . .

Monday went to the Minor Emergency Clinic. . .Doc freaked out and totally peeled the skin off both my hands . . .told me to come back the next day for a dressing change . . .next day, I walk in and the next Dr. would not treat me, and sent me straight to the ER . . .

20 Doctors or more came by to look at the hands , but no one could offer any clue . .sent me home with an appointment to see a Dermatologist . .first I had to see my Prmary Care MD. .

he was on the phone to have me admitted to the hospital . .and in contact with the CDC . .since I do deal in Dangerous Goods at work, he was ready to call in the HazMat Team . .I managed to cry my way out of it , promising to visit the Dermatologist daily . .she ran about 50 tests on me . .from diabetes to aids to cancer biopsy . .etc etc. etc. . .

bottom line . . .they never found out what caused it , but gave it a name like Dermatitus GANGRENOSUM . . .(sp) . . explained my immune system had shut down and caused the " explosion " on my hands . . .

I was on major dosage of antibiotics and massive steroids for almost 2 months. . yep, looked like a chipmunk and the whole 9 yards. . my hands were bandaged like footballs for about 8 weeks. .
'
I still have scars my hands, and some " denting " from the infections on my fingers. .

hope your hubby gets good care . . and it doesn't become the nightmare I had. . .

:-?

Thanks BGs. That is a scary story. I'm glad that you are OK now!

It didn't seem like all that big deal at first, but now I'm becoming uber paranoid about it. :-?

One night when he was about 9, I noticed a red mark on my son's knee when we got home from school/work. No biggie; figured it was a bite of some sort. About 8:00 that night, he said, "This kinda hurts" and pulled up his pant leg. There was a bright red lump the size of a baseball sitting on top of his knee. I called the doctor and brought him in. It was a staph infection/cellulitis. The doctor said if we'd waited until morning, he would have had to be admitted to the hospital, at least, and might have lost his leg. No idea where it came from... There was a pin-prickk of a scab on his knee, and something got in.

Nothing to screw with, these things....

Thank you ALL so much for your concern. He's doing pretty well right now, but sore. The end of the day is always more painful than the mornings. Gotta Clorox 2 all the sheets and towels in the house and be germophobic for a while (which is realllllly hard for me because I'm such the anti-neat freak).

All in all, though, his spirits are good and got his RX filled right away. The interactions are pretty weird, though, as he's got to avoid dairy, and it's actually an antibiotic so strong it's approved for treating Anthrax. :o
