Buffett and other performers have every right to speak their mind about political matters just as you and I do, it's just that they have a chance of reaching a wider audience by doing so. Still, I vote according to how I feel, not how they feel. If you're doing otherwise then you're part of the sheep mentality so often blamed on outspoken musicians and their fans. Not to mention political content in songs goes back much further than Jimmy Buffett speaking his mind on SUVs.

By the way. . . I got a chuckle out of this and it is kind of related. Just talk on another post through the rumor mill (if anyone read this) of Jimmy Buffett being in Key West finishing up the new album.
It seems somebody's brother (in-law, or some relation) lives in Key West and saw Jimmy Buffett's TRUCK parked outside of the studio there.
Does the phrase "Do as I say, not as I do" have any bearing here?
Or does he get a pass because it's a nice gas "economical" TRUCK as opposed to an evil gas-guzzling SUV.
Sorry to beat a dead horse here, but I find this quite funny.

The truck in question was a large Budget rental truck, with all the gear. It was not the vehicle Jimmy was driving.

And thus needing my SUV to move my gear. Not that I need an excuse. . . it makes it pretty damn convenient to carry all of mine and my buddies ski gear to the mountains for a beautiful powder day like today, which is where I am heading now.
I figure I'll burn through atleast 2-3 gallons to and from the slopes. What a waste!!! Gee, if only they made 4 wheel drive Yugos!

I have no problem with you driving an SUV. I drive one. But you look kinda foolish going off on JB for driving a truck in KW when that wasn't what he was driving at all....

To Ringling,

You can make fun of me as much as you want. My whole point is that trucks are a nessessary evil. Whether you want to call a SUV a truck or an SUV, it's still a truck and America functions with trucks. Business is done in trucks.
If you could figure out a way for me to strap all my gear into a Honda Accord, I'd be happy to drive one. If you could figure out a way I could move everything around in a Mercedes coupe, better still.
Or we could get realistic and accept the fact that the sport utility market is here and it's not going anywhere and people, especially stage performer's who tour the country with an entourage of buses, 18 wheeler's and yes, even airplanes have no right telling me what I should be driving whether I am delivering DJ equipment, or delivering a pizza!

And To Schoolgirl,

He was driving a truck, HIS TRUCK, not a rental, here's the post . . .

Mail boat- Recording in Progress sign on the door

deuce,

here's what it comes down to: there are people who certainly need them. I have no kick with someone or some group using an SUV for business. I have family members who have them, because they actually live out off gravel county roads, 25 miles from the nearest town of any size and use them on the farm for the "Utility Vehicle" portion of the name. I know contractors, surveyors, and the like that do the same thing.

On the other hand, the wide-load, stressing-the-shocks-because-their-butt's-too-big-to-fit-in-the-seat, XXXXL leather-bomber jacket and Indiana Jones fedora, urban professionals/soccer moms who think they are better than a minivan for cachet, who live 2 blocks from an arterial street and who have 2 weeks of winter to worry about in their yearly life, are the people I cast aspersions on.

I was also pointing out a flaw in your logic that entertainers should shut up, not voice their opinions, etc., given your line of work.

Some of your posts have a bit of a "snarky" tone to them, and if you really want to be taken seriously, you might want to let people see there is more than that facet to you. Or you could emulate OnTheEdge and his behaviour patterns... your choice.

To me, Buffett sells escapism. Escape to the tropics, escape from the humdrum of everyday life (yes, that includes politics). Buffett has every right to push whatever messages he wants, but if he were to make a habit out of regularly making political statements in his songs or performances, I'd probably be looking elsewhere for my 'escapism' entertainment....

Some singers/entertainers are known for the political stuff (not that Buffett doesn't do his share of politicing (sp?), he has a tendency to do it separate from his music/shows) and people expect that from them and their shows, good for them, but I like to keep my entertainment and my politics separate :)

what kind of truck does he drive?
A great big Budget rental truck....

(That was the truck parked by the studio, anyway...)
I was there. Jimmy was not driving a truck.

Snarky??? Hmmm. . . could you define that? If I understand right, I was thinking the same thing of your tone.
And not that I want to keep going in circles here, but the bottom line is the reason that the far-left has seen fit to target SUVs is that they are gas guzzlers. Well, so are trucks and NEWSFLASH . . . so are minivans. Once again, quacks like a duck, waddles like a duck, it's probably a duck. . . SUV, Minivan, Pickup all ducks, err, I mean trucks.
By the way, my SUV is a 6 cylinder, not overly tough, but tough enough. It gets 19-27 mpg. A lot of minivans don't do that good and I know there are a lot of "trucks" that are much worse.

Sidenote: I think the reason we both get irritated with each other is that we both tend to want the last word or at the very least, to one up the other. Call it a personality flaw and bottomline, you are the kind of person I love to have sitting next to me at a bar. . . it makes for interesting conversation. Believe it or not, I'd probably even offer to buy you a drink.

Shark on Land - Great point!

Escapism is why I love Buffett. In a word that is what he is all about to me.
That is why I am here. To enjoy the escape with likeminded individuals. . .

Oops! Sorry for spoiling the escape. I'll shut up now!

What I was saying doesn't have anything to do with partisan views. Personally I try my best to listen to all sides and vote for who I think is best for the job.

I guess they should be less honest and sell contrived fear, add a few totally bogus election cycle "issues" like gay marriage, Bible banning and man-animal hybrids.... then maybe they could win, right? LOL.

Hey LittleMrMagic...welcome to BN and baptism by fire. This place can be great...lots of lively discussion and fun...but once in a while things do go a bit overboard. Hang in there, keep a level head, enjoy the fun, and it'll become a second home. :D
