Any suggestions for a summer getaway, under a week, in the northeast? Upstate New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan... or thereabouts. Scenic drives and shopping are popular choices, maybe some sightseeing, but big cities aren't high on the list (oh, and maybe some Buffett-themed diversions for me ).
I was thinking maybe Pennsylvania Dutch country, and I've been told that the southeast end of Lake Michigan (around Benton Harbor, maybe?) is nice.
Any suggestions welcome!

a really great place in the north north east is manchester by the sea. about 30 minues outside of boston. it should be used as a movie set it is such a picturesque place. a beautiful rustic beach, a very cozy marketplace and a few nice little cafe's.
if you cant laugh at yourself, laugh at someone else.

Michigan destinations to consider should include the greater Traverse City area, anywhere on the west coast of the state and the upper penninsula.
I enjoy camping so a few ideas to throw out are...
Ludington State Park on the west coast
Brimley State Park in the UP. Not far from some beautiful falls.
Traverse City is incredible, but a little pricey. If you make it there, I recommend Mode's Bum Steer downtown. INCREDIBLE meats and quaint atmosphere. Not uncommon to find a red wing or two hanging out during training camps. Another FANTASTIC eating place is the old state mental hopsital. Ask around, someone will point you in the right direction.
A last recomendation would be Macinac Island. Tourist heaven, but off the beaten paths, very cool place to spend a day or so.
Love & Luck!

My favorites for scenic stuff. Biased, though, because we're mountain bikers/hikers/etc. so we go away from the big crowds and to the mountains:
Links to most may be found in my Webshots
Lake Placid, New York
Lake George, New York
Davis, WVa (www.blackbearwv.com is affordable, comfortable and nice for the price)
You could also work in Pa Dutch Country and the Poconos pretty easily if you wanted a drive. (Jim Thorpe and Stroudsburg are both "cute" towns)
Anything Skyline Drive in Va. or Wva.
Thanks for the tips, folks! Keep 'em coming! Some great ideas there.
Black Bear Camp looks particularly interesting. What a great price for a week during the summer! aealderm, can you tell me what else is in the area? I'm assuming it's not too far south of Pittsburgh?

If you want somewhere off the beaten path, or should I say down the dirt road, try Birch Shores Cabins owned by the Bitely's in McMillan ( near Curtice in the Upper Peninsula of MI). The cabins are on Lake Manistique and each cabin comes with a boat to fish, explore, etc.. They have a small beach, a "common" hall with ping pong and fireplace, bon fires and much more exploring in the area. You can pick blueberries, but watch out for bears.
Go to the Cooperstown in area in Upstate New York. Even if you're not a baseball fan the whole area is beautiful and there is lots of other stuff to do too.

It was a great spot ... the pond on the property is stocked for fishing (not to mention other great fishing in the area), we rented mountain bikes and did some pretty intensive riding, but if you're not into that yuou could still rent and do a scenic ride: The guys at Blackwater Bikes know their stuff. It's also home to Blackwater Falls State Park, which we never actually made it to, but I've heard is beautiful. It's in the Caanan Valley ... the golf is good (three or four courses within a 30-40 minute drive).
I can't say enough good things about those cabins. They're so reasonable in the summer, I think, because it's mostly a ski area so the summer is the off season. I thought they were too good to be true, but they were exactly what we were looking for and more (no Ritz, but clean, comfy, roomier than a hotel room, with every amenity you could want).
It's about a two-hour drive to Antetheim (sp???) Battlefield, which was interesting.
I don't think you'd be far from Pittsburgh, but I'm really not sure. We were a bout a 5-hour drive from the Philly area. It is most assuredly away from people: there are a handful of restaurants, but I'd plan on cooking in (but the pizza place next to the bike shop in Davis is yummmmy).
You guys (and gals) are great! I knew I could count on BN folk to give me some awesome ideas.
Right now, we're leaning towards spending a few days in the Canaan Valley WV (thanks to aealderm for the tip), then a couple of days in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and maybe a day in Corning NY (home of the glass) and - if I'm lucky - rounding it off with a dinner at the Dinosaur Bar-b-que in Rochester NY.
Probably also check out Hershey while we're in that part of PA, and maybe a little side trip to mega-mall in King of Prussia. Has anyone been there? Is it worth the drive from Harrisburg/Lancaster?

I'm about an hour from hershey. I go to there about 3-4 times a year, and I would definitely recommend Hershey, even if you're not an amusement park fan. It's clean, family friendly, and a nice environment to enjoy a day out.
As for King of Prussia mall, unless there is a specific store you are going for, it really is just another mall, it's just big. I work 5 minutes from it. It has 2 sections, one larger one, and a small section. There are some decent restaurants around it, but there's not a whole lot 'special' about it. It's surrounded by a traffic packed road (rt 202), and corporate complexes for the most part. You can go to www.kingofprussiamall.com to see a list of stores.
Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all..
