For the Starbucks haters...

It's cold here today. It was the kind of cold day that meant stopping half-way between the parking garage and the building where I worked for a grande mocha with extra whipped cream. Those two blocks were simply too much to bear without something warm between my fingers.

It's my usual Starbucks. I always order the same thing. Grande mocha (well, sometimes a tall if the cash is runnin' a little short) with extra whipped cream. Today, the handsome early-twenties-something cashier asked for my name after I ordered. I knew I looked cute today, but I was seriously flattered. Well, I was flattered until I realized the coffee-maker gal was writing my name on my cup.

I had to think about the process for a moment, but I realized as she was making my drink and instead of calling out, "Grande mocha double whip," when my order was done, she would actually call out my name. I wasn't just a coffee. I was a name!!!

To top it all off, she even spelled my name correctly. I get a lot of people who spell it M-a-l-l-o-r-i-e, or only use one "l" but she nailed it. I have a beautiful M-a-l-l-o-r-y just under the rim of my cup written so perfectly with a black Sharpie.

So, for all you Starbucks haters, today was different. I was a name. I was my name. I was Mallory. Regardless if it was a directive from the corporate office to become more personal with customers, it worked, and I suspect it will continue to work.

It's not as though if I was simply still a grande mocha with double whip that I would stop going to that Starbucks, but obviously, I'm taking time to tell you about it, and what better PR could a company ask for?

Such a heartwarming story Mal... I am glad you are no longer just a Grande mocha double whip... I am truly glad you are now a name...

Maybe I will try Starbucks again... I doubt it because their coffee is not my favorite... but maybe.. just because you are a name...

:D :P  :) :wench:

I love starbucks. People hate them because they're succesful and everywhere. There's a reason for that.

I think people hate them because of their misusunderstood corporate stance but from what I understand they've done lots of things to benefit the less fortunate. Still, they're severely overpriced. They do have good taste in CDs though. I got a wonderful rare Dylan disc from there.

Wawa knows my name very well. I've actually had them come over the gas pump speaker and say hello to me and let me know that they have macaroni and cheese and that it's fresh.

(I spend way too much time at wawa. I haven't quite gotten Starbucks to know me by name....yet.....but I'm working on it)

Congrats Mal! :D

Haa haa!! You and your Wawa's MacNCheese!! If I'd have known Wawa's was so cool, I would have gotten more stuff there when I visited one in Newark, DE. :D

The gas station by my house which is normally exclusively pay-before-you pump, let me pump before I go in and pay. Especially helpful when I have both the kiddos with me!! One time, he even came outside and let me hand him my check so I didn't have to bring the kids through the cold.

Now that's a keeper of a gas station! Perks of being a regular at places :D

;) Yeah, I have a sort of obsession with Wawa's mac n chs. Many a time they've cooked up a bag even when they didn't have it on the menu for me. Wawa loves me :) They always give me free rolls with butter. (it's the little things in life)

There's not many here either. It's just a privately owned little gas station in our neighborhood and they know us pretty well. We're in there at least 3 times a week, if not more. They have been open forever and I think they've stayed open because they are very good to their customers. :D Not a great selection when it comes to convenience store items, but they are always happy to see me (I'm Miss Marrrorie if that gives you any idea  ).

I don't hate Starbucks but I could very easily do without them. They're way overpriced and the regular coffee isn't even that good. But I'll drink it when I get to the office because it's free.

For me, Starbucks is a special treat (I love my mochas), usually only on payday, so I don't mind paying $3.65 for a mocha. We have free Starbucks regular coffee in the office now too. I'm just not all that picky when it comes to coffee, so unless it's REALLLLY bad, if it's free, I'm not complaining! We've had so many cuts at our company, that it's a wonder we still have free coffee. God knows I couldn't get a pen or a paperclip if I needed them.

 That's great, Mal! I've had my name called at a few Starbucks around the city too. I have a hunch though that it's less marketing strategy and more a way to reduce error... keeping some people from walking off with the wrong drink and then subsequently the baristas have to throw away the dumb person's actual order and then make a new one to replace the one that was taken erroneously in the first place. I don't care how they call me, just please make it in less than a half hour! :-?

I think 10 mins is probably the longest I've had to wait at this Starbucks and even then it was REALLLLLY busy. Usually it's only 3-4 minutes if there's a handful of people ahead of me.

Of all the Starbucks I've been to, I really like this one. Not a lot of turnover with employees and they've always been exceedingly yet earnestly friendly.
