Is today the anniversary of the gold medal game or the game they beat the Russians? After the Russians they still had to beat Finland to win the gold.

Was running my saloon across the street from Illinois State University. Right after the end, +200 college kids broke out in "God Bless America"

6 years later I met Herb Brooks, told him the story and he said, "Yeah kid, heard it a million times" :-?

Has to be the day they beat the Russians. Feb 22 was a Friday in 1980, and the game against Finland was that Sunday.

Finland was winning going into the 3rd period. Legend has it during the intermission between the 2nd and 3rd periods Herb Brooks told the team "If you lose this game you'll take it to your f'n grave."

There was an interview with Mike Eruzione, the captain of the team, in the NY Post a couple of days ago. He said he was in a pro/am golf tournament and his partner was a woman. She bent over to pick up her ball and he told the caddy "I could look at that ass all day." The caddy said "That's why I married her."

"Great moments... are born from great opportunity. And that's what you have here, tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game. If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight, WE are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it." Herb Brooks in "Miracle" before the game against USSR.
