what are some of the closer hotels? Y-No's post makes verizon sound like it's run by an ex-vice-principal and I always try to avoid long walks in the dark when I've been downisland for a few hours 8)
You'll either want to hit the University Area---Hilton's the top hotel, also a Holiday and several others on Harris Blvd/Hwy 29 (North Tryon)

The second area is Concord Mills. There are 5 or 6 hotels on the Speedway Blvd exit about 5 miles north of Verizon.

Last time he played Verizon it sucked because it was the season after 9/11 and they were searching everyone for pocketknives, etc. It took about 45 minutes to get in. I haven't been to a concert there in a few years, but they were always strict on tailgaiting (which is why I figured that Jimmy has been playing indoors in Charlotte recently). Hopefully, he negotiated for early tailgating, otherwise we'll do it at the house, then ride down to Verizon. Would much rather party in the lot though to see all the sites and sounds

The ampitheater website doesn't have any info up yet. The tailgating issue is going to be the decision maker for me between Charlotte and Atlanta. (sigh)

I am also trying to decide between Charlotte and Atlanta. I'll probably pick Charlotte because I've been to Verizon before and know the area.

I was there in 2002 and tailgating was bad, also took 45 minutes to get in, I will still be there though. We ended up tailgating in a movie theater parking lot across the street with other parrotheads before main lots opened at 6pm, pretty good times.

Hope to meet some of you folks, I will be in atlanta too. Have fun!!!

Is there a particular hotel (close to the verizon) where PH's are welcomed and lots of pholks will be tailgating? Last year in Charlotte we stayed in a hotel (forgot the name) across the street from the coliseum that shared a parking lot with Jock's & Jill's sportsbar. There ended up being a few hundred tailgaters out there even on a chilly February afternoon. We're used to the tailgating friendly atmosphere at Riverbend. Nothing like a huge party with a bunch of parrotheads to start the afternoon off right :pirate:
you can't lay on the beach and drink rum all day if you don't start in the morning 8)

I don't know of any first hand, but I'm sure the local PH club will keep everyone up to date. There is a bar in the University Area (Boardwalk Billy's) that I am sure will tie in. They have Buffett album covers on the bar, etc.

We rented an RV last night for the trip to Charlotte - but hey, does anyone know if there is a place near the concert site, to park the RV the night before and get some good tailgating time in the day of? Any advise or info is appreciated.

tailgating

Post by fltfixer »

I've read the previous posts and was at Charlotte with the no tailgating and the long line to get in --but, does anyone think this year might be different? My crew usually go to Nissan( where the partys great) but date wise Charlotte is easier. :-? Thanks.

Going, but have no idea about tailgaiting. We are staying about 2.5 miles away. Hope it's not a no tailgate zone!

There's a Tom Johnson Camping Center/Fleetwood RV Resort on Speedway Blvd. It's huge and would be the place to be. You may want to contact them then invite others. Keep me posted and I may join you for a drink or two on Saturday night.

Hoping to be there. Hate that the tailgating factor is what it is. We can all find a place to make our own party though.

We might have to tailgate offsite somewhere if Verizon's going to be "uncooperative". Maybe we can take over a parking lot somewhere nearby like Tipsy Mcstumbles or something near the speedway. We have 2 Hummer limos coming and we plan to start early....one way or another! :wench:
