Keet is Moving to Nashville

Post by ToplessRideFL »

On our recent weekend visit, our eldest keet announced she wants to move from Indy to Nashvile in May. I know little or nothing about the area...so I once again call on my phrends for a little help.

Seems most interested in the following:

* Best area to live on a salary of around 30k in and around the Nashville area

* Where to work... she has admin/ clerical support skills. 2 yr degree. Her current company has an office there... good for immediate $$$ but she want to spread out to a local company...

*She is 26 and single... would love to live "in a quaint studio in the city". Does that exist?

* Any areas to stay away from?

* What is the weather like?

Thanks phrends. I will forward all your suggestions..... :D

Seems most interested in the following:

* Best area to live on a salary of around 30k in and around the Nashville area There are a lot of what I would call "funky little houses" that are old but have been renovated for grad students, but might also be nice for her. Around Vanderbilt and Belmont campuses in West Nashville (I can give you more specifics if needed), there are a ton of cookie cutter apartment complexes, whose rent runs from reasonalbe to "Oh My Sweet Jesus That is High", I'll be happy to send her/you some Apartment Guides or anything else you might be in need of.

* Where to work... she has admin/ clerical support skills. 2 yr degree. Her current company has an office there... good for immediate $$$ but she want to spread out to a local company..., lots of good websites do a Google

*She is 26 and single... would love to live "in a quaint studio in the city". Does that exist?

* Any areas to stay away from? I would stay away from East Nashville, certain parts of town east of I-65, if she has a specific spot in mind, let me know and I can tell you what I think about it.

* What is the weather like?
We get a good mixture of hot and cold, but mostly hot. If she doesn't like hot, muggy weather then she might reconsider, but she's used to FL weather so it shouldn't be a big change. The winters are usually pretty mild, with occasional cold snaps, if you don't like the weather wait two weeks and it will change.

I've got to run to class, I'll think of some more and get back to ya.

Thanks Brad... I appreciate it!

She actually lives in Indianapolis.... so moving to Nashville may be a nicer change for her.

I will pass along the info you have provided and thanks for the offer for further help if needed.

It is a great city, one of my favorites. I lived there for a while, but had to return to the sea. If they only had an ocean...
It might be muggy and hot to someone who's never lived by the sea, but I would never characterize Nashville as muggy and hot.
East Nashville actually has some really cool neighborhoods (though it does have rough spots too). West Nashville gets pricey fast, especially as you get into Green Hills and Belle Meade.
As far as places to work, there seem to be regular openings in the state government, but the question is what does she want to be doing in 5-10 years? There a lot of internal promotion in Southern businesses, so her best bet is to try to get into a company that she's truly interested in. I've known several people in Nashville who started answering phones and worked their way up (relatively quickly) to an executive or managerial position.
Good luck!

She should definitely stay away from the Antioch area. Hubby and I lived there after we got married, lots of crime. We are in the West Meade area now. Nashville is a great town.

I've lived here in the Metro Nashville nearly all of my life... which doesn't translate to nearly as much knowledge of the place as you would expect, but I would be happy to help in any way I can. An ex-husband of mine from one of those small, assorted northern states often (in fact, one time too often) joked that I wasn't really from around here.

I've worked at Opryland Hotel for nearly 25 years and we always have openings of one kind or another, so have her pm me if she has any interest in the hospitality business.

At some time in the next 6-8 months, I expect that my own little rental house will be available at a very reasonable rent, but I can't offer it up until my current renters find a home to buy. They've lived in the home for the last 3 years, since Hubby & I moved into our current home next door to it.

Wow, this is self-pimping as its best, isn't it? Nonetheless, onward...

A lot of the people I work with are in the 23-30-year-old age range, and work in different areas of the hospitality business. Lots of plusses and minuses in that business, but it's pretty much the only business I know at this point. But there are plenty of businesses here. Send her on. We'll help take care of her.

Not knowing anything specifically about The Hospitality Business in nashville but you're right about the age of people in the business. I'm 30, a department head level manager but my GM is maybe 42. It is a fun business....
