FIRST KEYS 'CLEAN MARINA' CELEBRATES 5TH ANNIVERSARY

--Bayside Marina celebrates five years as a Clean Marina--

ISLAMORADA – The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today recognized Bayside Marina at Worldwide Sportsman for five consecutive years as a Clean Marina. The ceremony applauds the marina for sustaining best management practices that are protecting and preserving the valuable ecosystems of the Florida Keys.

“Bayside Marina has taken the initiative to be an environmental leader in its industry,” said DEP District Director Jon Iglehart. “By participating in the Clean Marina program and reaching this five-year milestone this facility has continually demonstrated its dedication to protecting Florida’s natural resources.”

Representatives of the Village of Islamorada, the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary joined DEP in celebrating Bayside Marina's anniversary. Bayside is the first Clean Marina in the Florida Keys to complete the five-year review and was presented with a new plaque and flag to commemorate the milestone. Bayside received their Clean Marina status in August 2000 and now are the third in the State to receive this five-year honor. There are currently 113 Clean Marinas and 21 Clean Boatyards in Florida.

"Clean water is crucial to recreation and tourism in our state," stated the Clean Boating Partnership's co-chair, Brad St. Coeur. "Bayside Marina sets and excellent example for other facilities throughout Florida on how environmental best management practices are not only good for the environment but are good for business as well."

The Clean Boating Partnership, which includes the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), marina and boatyard owners and operators, Marine Industries Association of Florida, Florida Sea Grant Program, United States Coast Guard (USCG) and Coast Guard Auxiliary, developed the Clean Boater and Clean Marina Programs to help boaters, marinas and boatyards use environmental practices to preserve Florida’s natural resources.

The Clean Marina Program encourages Florida’s marinas, boatyards and marine retailers to use eco-friendly practices beyond regulation requirements by adopting best management practices. Marine patrons are encouraged to look for the Clean Marina Flag, which denotes an environmentally-conscious marine facility.
