Venting......

Post by bananaman »

For the last 8 concerts that I've been to I've had to go with a group of people who are primarily there for the pre-show festivities. They know the songs from SYKBH and maybe a few others but thats about it. And now this year they're griping because Jimmy's skipping our town (Columbia,SC) and threating not to go to see him in Charlotte. (Basically leaving me on my own)...they say it's too far. Are you kidding me?!?!? Before he even came to SC we had to go see him for years in NC. Any way, here I am, no one to go with, while my "friends" sit at home and listen to him on Sirius because they don't want to hassle themselves with the whole "concert thing". It really p*** me off. :x It's bad enough that they don't want to go but even worse that I have to go stag. Thanks for listening.....

PS. Anyone want to hook up with a real parrothead in Charlotte and party your a$$ off? 8) :pirate: I'm about due for some tailgating with a few parrotheads who actually know the words to more than just Margaritaville, dontcha think?

You'll find someone.

As proof of the good nature of real ParrotHeads, I went to the Philly show last year by myself. Got hooked up with a few Pirates of the Susquehanna and met several awesome (and 1 puddle jumping) BN'rs.

I had the best time.

And if someone had an extra lawn ticket, I might be due for a road trip by then. Charlotte (WOOOOO!!!) is not that far away.

I wish someone would define the term "Real Parrothead".

If someone wishes to not attend shows it doesn't make them any less of a fan. As for the constant griping about Songs You Know By Heart, whenever there's a What Was Your First Buffett Album? thread you'd be amazed at the amount of people that name Songs You Know By Heart as theirs. People tend to forget that everyone here was new to Buffett at one time or another.

But some don't care, or choose, to evolve beyond SYKBH and the once-a-year party.

I agree, but when the people go to shows for 5 years or so and still don't know much more than SYKBH......they are just there for the party.

I agree with Jah on the "real Parrothead" thing. That's something that's always bothered me. I've been a fan for 30 years, I've been to more than 60 Buffett concerts, but I don't know the words to all the songs. I don't plan on learning them either, it's just not that important to me. Does that mean I'm not a "real Parrothead"?

I haven't seen a Buffett concert since the mid-90s yet I own nearly all of his material on CD, DVD, VHS, vinyl, etc., have purchased all of his books and have been a fan since the early 70s. What criteria does one have to meet to be considered a "real" fan and what criteria disqualifies someone from meeting these requirements?

I can see folks viewpoints on fans there for the party vs. ones there that are more avid fans but nothing precludes the other from attending Buffett concerts altogether. In the final years the Grateful Dead toured their shows started to attract an element that wasn't present at the shows before who favored gatecrashing over actually paying to get in because they too were just there for the party. Hopefully the same thing won't happen to Buffett shows.

but what is wrong with just going to the pre-party if you get shutout for tix? It's a JB concert and everyone there is just there to have fun and blow of some steam.

Noo it is not wrong to go to party but I am talking about example last year a group of Sorority chicks came to Cincy not for Jimmy but just to party.
Now I am all for people coming to see Jimmy and enjoy the party before hand but if they just want to party stay outside of the venue.

Wow. I guess I'll choose my terms a little more carefully next time.

I guess what I meant was a person that would not bail on their buddy just cuz the show was a couple of hours down the highway. A person that gets it when something is important to a friend and will make the sacrifice to help someone else have a good time. It's not just about the music, but also about the day to gather with friends and celebrate whatever you have to celebrate. ParrotHeads seem to get that. Others do not.

The term was never meant as a slight against someone that does not know the words to all the songs. I do not know them and do not intend to learn them.

The nothing the matter with that term but I've seen it used many times as a way to distinguish one's fandom. I was just curious as to the definition of a "real" Parrothead.

Did your friends already commit to see Buffett with you during this tour no matter where he was going to play? Not everyone can afford to the travel the great distances and go to the expense many here seem to be able to. I also don't see the harm in attending a show solo, particularly if you want to go that bad.

Unfortunately, all my friends think I'm a little 'eccentric' with this Buffett fascination I have. There is one guy who is a ParrotHead and he will road trip with me any time. Unfortunately his business travel interferes with his willingness some times.

And I have only just discoverd this wacky BN world and I no longer live in fear of the solo road trip. I have gone stag before and will again. Soon.

defining real and friends

Post by karat »

Wow - there are people out there that are just like others.

The 'real parrothead' comment - I get ticked off when people try to 'out smart' me about what I know about JB. I do not know details like where he started (strike that), like everything about his first album to his favorite icecream. I don't spell things normally not spelled with a ph. I know the words to a bit more than "by heart" song. Okay I have only really started enjoying him in the 90's.....but I say I am a follower (oh yeah, I do listen to other music, granted the only tape in my car is a Buffett...but I do).

But what is great about Buffett is that everything is a mix - knowing a little of this fact or that fact, favoring rum or tequila, sporting floral shorts or tatoos.... Buffett is fun in the sun (or at least pretend it is sunny), he is an escape from the cruel reality we live in.

Friends - that cop out of going a few extra 100 miles - when will they have an oppourtunity again? Life is way too short - enjoy what you can, 'cause tomorrow may be the last day here.

I have friends that are always gun ho about going and back out at last minute. I have friends who tailgate, not to just to party but enjoy the company of other Parrotheads. Nothing wrong with that.

If you are in Pittsburgh - look for the local Parrothead Club - I do not belong, do to, too many other commitments...but they welcome everyone with open arms...

Maybe Parrotheads should be like boy scouts.....we could earn badges....levels of parrotheadism to prove our "realness".....

Body Shot Badge
Tequila Shot Badge
Grass Skirt Weaving
Tiki Bar Construction Badge
