I think this changeup is stage one.
But from watching other acts (Rolling Stones, for example), performers think they can just quit and tour no more. Then after a while of that boring kinda life, they realize they miss the road, the fans, the applause of tens of thousands......
The Stones don't tour every year but contrary to what many people seem to think, they've never said any of their tours would be a farewell tour.
