I`m just wondering if Jimmy will ever get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Personally I think he's earned the right to be inducted. Just my opinion.

Indicted or inducted? Those are two totally different things

But, sure, it is always nice to see Jimmy get some recognition. :D

Indicted or inducted?

Considering how Jann Wenner and Rolling Stone have really come around to him in recent years it may well happen. Do I personally think it will? I seriously doubt it.

Well, as long as he isn't dating a shirt.

You're right though, it should be in Discussion not Related. I'll ask one of the ladies who moderates this forum to move it when they get a chance.

Sure he will. Right after they open the "Lifestyle Artist" wing.

As big of a Buffett as I am, I honestly don't see him ever being nominated, particularly if you look at the criteria other performers were inducted under.

http://www.rockhall.com/hof/process.asp

Performers
Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artist’s contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.

In the 70s he was definitely big in singer/songwriter circles and was groomed by MCA to be a successor to the late Jim Croce. Everyone knows the turn his career took with "Margaritaville" and everything that followed. That seems to be his legacy and one to be damn proud of but I just don't see it as enough to base an induction on. Of course we also know there's an everygrowing legion of Buffett-like artists out there but they seem to be remaining on the fringes of Parrothead circles with none having any real success breaking into the mainstream. And if they did, would their brand of music be something to base an induction of Jimmy Buffett into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame on?

If it hasn't happened by now, I'm guessing it won't ever. Even though his concerts sell out faster than any other and more often than any other.
I don't know HOW "they" decide who gets inducted, but it's a bigger farce than the B.B.W.A.A. deciding who gets selected for induction into BASEBALL'S hall of fame.

I think its more on the lines of radio play, albulm sales.

There is no fan voting in any Hall Of Fame that I know of.

Just a few posts back is the criteria for induction:

As you can see, it is not based on album sales, concert grosses or radio airplay but on "the influence and significance of the artist’s contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll".

The Foundation’s nominating committee, composed of rock and roll historians, selects nominees each year in the Performer category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of about 1,000 rock experts. Those performers who receive the highest number of votes, and more than 50 percent of the vote, are inducted. The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each year.

Hence NOT THE FANS

:D Living here in Cleveland Ohio, the Home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we spoke with the director about this very issue. We also spoke with the executives in New York.

They told us that Jimmy is on the large ballot every year. This is the list that the actual nominees come from, so Jimmy could be a nomination at any time.

Perhaps it would be a very good project to work on getting the industries support of a nomination for Jimmy. Maybe we could mount a campaign soliciting their support for his nomination. That seems like it would be a great Parrothead project! :o :D

You may not know that you can become a member to the Rock Hall. That might just give us some entre' into working towards Jimmy's Nomination!

I don't think it's a matter of "has he accomplished enough to justify induction". I think his career sales, tour sales, influence on other artists, impact and upstart of fresh music styles, outreach, branding/cross-over successes and so on, a very strong argument can be made for induction to any music-related hall of fame.

The question with Jimmy is that no one is going to know which hall of fame he belongs in. Rock and roll? Country? Something else? Should there be a new hall of fame for jack-of-all-trades musicians like JB? I don't know, but I would like to see him get the respect and honor he deserves.

I've posted the criteria for induction twice already and have to wonder if some of you have even bothered to read it but just to clarify one more time: sales do not have anything to do with an artists' induction. It has to do with "the influence and significance of the artist’s contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll'.

Go to the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame website and you'll see the artists inducted so far are in no way strictly rock n' roll:

If you think the voters don't subconsciously take those things into account, you're crazy! That was the point I was trying to make. Maybe they aren't allowed to justify their votes with those items, they still will play a part in the ultimate vote. That's how all voting for these things works.

Secondly, if you'll to read my post you'll see that wasn't the only point I was making, either. I think those sales items are a small portion of the ultimate influence, but they certainly play a part to most of the individual voters. Although if I was a voter I'd have plenty of reasons to vote him in that have nothing to do with sales.

Also, my comment about which hall he would belong in is based in the fact that his entire career questions of how he should be classified have haunted him. He was good but hard to market, so he got passed up on a couple record deals. I wouldn't expect induction into a hall of fame to meet any less questioning. Although, I think Jimmy's qualified himself as much as many of the artists on that list and I think some day we could see him in a major hall of fame.

He's a stand-alone performer that has proven his worth, and I hope SOME day he gets honored in the Hall for that.

Look at some of the performers inducted and you'll see not all of them have enjoyed massive record sales (like the Velvet Underground for instance) so you'll see that sales DO NOT play a part in the voting process.

Johnny Cash is in both the Country Music and the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fames but that is a rarity. As much as I love Buffett, I'll be the first to say he's no Johnny Cash. As for who Buffett has siginificantly influenced to warrant induction into the Rock n' Roll of Fame I haven't seen anyone name one soul yet.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Buffett fan but don't see him meeting the criteria to be considered for induction into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame or the Country one for that matter.

I think that Jimmy Buffett will NOT get into the Hall of Fame...Jimmy has a cult following that grows every year...He is a genius at what he does and has done a great job of marketing himself...I have seen 8 Buffett shows and have enjoyed everyone....The problem is Buffett is not known throughout the world..I LOVE Buffet but no Hall of Fame...He is however in MY Hall of Fame....This is my first post and I am glad I found a Bunch of Parrot Heads...I was shutout trying to get tickets for Buffett at Camden NJ.  :pirate:

He's a favorite of mine, and he's really a cult following and an acquired taste here, but not so internationally.
His own marketing strategy of opening Margaritaville(s) assures his legacy.
I don't think he really wants or needs the approval of RRHOF

Unlikely, methinks, but possible. You never know. I agree that it is just too hard to classify him, and while there are many not so traditional rockers in the Rock Hall (I, too, and from Cleveland), JB is a little too cult, I think. The sound he makes is too similar to...um..rockabily, maybe....and there are already a lot of those pioneers in there. ONLY TIME WILL TELL.
