most of the Sanibel restraunts are good and almost all are expensive, The Timbers is very good, Jacaranda is an old standby, The Bubble Room is very good and expensive. On the lower end is the Canoe Club at Tween Waters and the Lazy Flamingo.
In Ft Myers there are a couple of "local" places that most don't know about, The Veranda is right downtown and is very good and Sasses has always been a favorite, it changed hands recently and we will have to see if they maintain the excellence.
If you don't mind a drive out to Pine Island my favorite overall is Tarpon Lodge at Pineland, It is an old 1950's Lodge that sits right on Pine Island Sound, the food and views are super.
Breakfast at RC Otters on Captiva Island is a MUST! Best omelets that I've ever had and one of the few places you can eat outside.
I don't want to live on that kind of island
No, I don't want to swim in a roped off sea.
Too much for me, too much for me
I've got to be where the wind and the water are free.
Hi,
When is your trip?
My inlaws own a home on Sanibel and are there now. I love to get conch salad at the Lazy Flamingo. The Island Cow may still be there. Randy Wayne White's 'Doc Ford's Sanible Island Restaurant and Rum Bar'. Good osyters. More expensive than Ft. Myers Beach, but that is expected. He's one of our favorite fiction authors. He's there sometimes.
We love Ft. Myers Beach. The Beached Whale is great.
Conch Fritters with the best sauce. Great happy hours up on the deck with cold pitchers of beer and hot wings. Beach Pierside Grill, another of our favorites: nice happy hour with live music and good shrimp with butter/garlic sauce. Some little outdoor eating bar in Times Square across the walkway from the Beached Whale area...cant' remember the name, but great happy hour pitchers of beer. We usually stay at the Island Lighthouse Resort across from the Times Square area. Great setting, nice Tiki bar between the two pools, always unfriendly service at the front desk. Ha.
We love to catch the cheap trolley to Lover's Key State Park and rent a kayak and go snorkeling. Not sure how they've recovered from hurricane damage though.
Hope to get there around the 4th of July or Labor Day Weekend.
Have fun!!!

Arkansas, if you are out at FMB then you should try the Smokin Oyster Brewery, they are situated in the area under the bridge. Some friends own the place and other than the usual beach food they also feature some spicy Carribean type dishes.
2 of my favorites.. Bubble Room on Sanibel and Gulf Shores for breakfast on FMY beach. I used to go to the Tarpon Lodge when I was a kid, my grandparents lived on Matalacha.
Snug Harbour on Ft. Myer's Beach. Great food, great prices.
Great topic to bring up too, I'll be down there visiting my Oma in 9 days before we head up to Orlando. I'll have to check out some of the other places you guys talk about...

Snug Harbor.. I agree, spent many happy hours there when I lived aboard my boat at Moss Marine.
Everyone thank you so much for your responses! I am actually leaving on Saturday and will be there for a week.
Like I said I had been there before, but couldn't remember the name of a few of the places. I did eat at the Beached Whale and it was very good. I vaguely remember a place called Sunset Grille that had awesome wings, and it was located a few places from the Lani Kie.
The first time I was there I actually stayed at the Lighthouse It was before they put the Tiki bar it, it used to be a towel dropoff. You aren't lying about the un-friendlines though:)
Do you have access to a boat? If so, deffinatley get to Cabbage Key for lunch. My favorite bar around SW Florida. And then go to Boca Grande. One of my all time favorite beach towns. Don't forget to eat at Temptation, or "The Temp". BG is what I picture KW was like 50 years ago.
Not to mention Buffett spends a lot of time there durring tarpon season. Mark Futch operates his seaplane from above Boca Grande outfitters, as well as BG being the town they used to film the new movie, "Hoot". AND, Thomas McGuaine has a house there (which is where buffett stays)

Yeah..the Mucky Duck is like Mallory Square light. You don't have all the performers, but you have island music, beer, and a beach.
OH, yeah...I totally forgot. The Smokin Oyster Brewery is cool. It is right behind the Pizza Hut. We love to hang out there on the open bar area and eat oysters and garlic cheese bread and their own beer. But, I think their beer is actually brewed in the Tampa area, not sure. Anyhow, it's a nice laidback place, especially compared to some of the upscale places on Sanible and Captiva, but that may be what you want. We go here with swimsuits, sunburns and flipflop feet. No problem mon! Also, there is a guy who plays there on Ft. Myers Beach during the winter months. He played for our BeachHouse fundrasier last spring in Fayetteville. He's a lot of fun. His name is Mark Northey. You can find him at the Rooftop Aloha Deck at the Lani Kai Hotel October Through May, Monday Through Thursday, 4:00 to 8:00. I wish I were heading there on Saturday!!!!

The atmosphere on the beach in front of the Mucky Duck is awesome!! But stick with the beer on the beach. I was not impressed with the food there at all.
I live in Ft Myers and can not stand the Mucky Duck. Food is overated and the the worst service I have ever personally experienced was in their place. Also the whole "prank" schtick bugs me to no end, when I'm paying good money for food and a view I don't want fake ketchup squirted at me.
Take a decent bottle of wine and just walk out to the beach, sit at the picnic tables or on a blanket and watch the sunset, then pack up and go eat someplace else.

Thanks for confirming my impression of the place. I ate there once and found the food there to be inedible. That's going some for me because I can eat most anything. It also was home of the World's Worst Margarita. It was made with a white wine base instead of tequila and was pretty disgusting.
The atmosphere in the front if the place however was fantastic. We loved drinking beer there and watching the performers with the sunset and beach in the background.
