She became one of the first persons to be
"pied" (i.e., hit in the face with a pie) -- in
Des Moines in 1977 -- as a political act.

But I do remember enjoying her recordings.

So, lemme get this straight... Anita Bryant sang a homophobic song on the Mickey Mouse Club and dedicated it to Annette Funicello who promptly hit her in the face with a pie? :D :D :D

Bart Simpson, "Grandpa, how do you know so much about history?"
Grandpa, "I pieced it together mostly from sugar packets."

Looking at that picture I posted made me wonder...
Has anyone here ever been subjected to "recruitment"?
I mean really now, have you ever experienced anything
that could be considered someone trying to "turn you gay"?

Manana is one of my favorites as well and is just a great anthem to what Jimmy was all about, especially back then...the wandering island troubador living for the moment...and where he remains- frozen in time- in many of our parrothead psyches....ahhhhh remember with me

I got to head this boat south pretty soon
New album's old and I'm fresh out of tunes
But I know that I'll get 'em, I know that they'll come
Through the people and places and caldwoods rum
:pirate:

I lived for two years in the Virgin Islands and really found a connection to this song..and many others while I was down there. The rum distillery on Tortola is Callwood.

Kind of an ironic twist to the whole Anita Bryant situation....Last weekend I was in Bentonville Arkansas for a wedding and was reading the local newspaper. As I flipped through the obituary page I noticed the photo of a young, handsome man who had died. I don't usually read obits, but if I see a young person passing, I find myself reading those to see what the cause of death was. Anyway in his obit it listed as one of his survivors as his husband.

Earlier in his obit it listed his accomplishments and it seems that he was an entertainer of some sorts and one of his jobs was working at the Anita Bryant theater in Branson. So she has either softened her stance on gays or is a hypocrit. Anyway, I thought it was ironic that a gay man would be working at the Anita Bryant theater. Not that there's anything wrong with it.

Even Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Pink Floyd or the Beatles? Kiss were influential, along with Alice Cooper, in the theatrical side of rock but aside from that I don't really see anything worthy of inducting them into the Hall for. In recent years they've devolved into a sad self-parody, doing a reproduction of their late 70s show night in and night out with no change in the setlist. Past members are replaced by new folks wearing the same makeup (something Kiss had never done before) just to keep the "brand packaging" the same. This, coupled with their endless farewell tours and Gene Simmon's shameless marketing have turned them into the corporate whores they've become.

I guess maybe sometimes people do "live & learn..." :D

It may be that JB didn't like her "elevator music" style instead of her politics...
Or maybe he didn't want to be boycotted like the Florida citrus industry was.

My first Buffett concert was at Shea's Buffalo in late 1978 or early '79. JB said he was premiering a song with a Buffalo reference to the Blizzard of '77. The song was Manana, and it has always been my favorite! That was my daughter's first favorite song, because she loved the lines "don't try to describe a Kiss Concert(etc.) if you've never seen it" because she was already tired of people talking out their a** about things they knew nothing about! I've only heard Jimmy perform it live twice (during the same tour) at the Woodstock Buckeye Lake (OH) concert... which we couldn't get into immediately because of the mud/rain situation. So then we had to go see him at the "Jake" in Cleveland on the same tour, so we could actually be in the venue when he sang the song!! He also did Growing Older (But Not Up) on that tour! It was my favorite, except for 2004! :D

My god that seems like yesterday. I was at both shows also. I swear we never did get all the mud out of the car from the Buckeye Lake show....I had so much fun that night...Jimmy in a monsoon!
