Been there, done that when I was in college. Other than goofing on customers, it's not worth the paycheck.Southern Monkey wrote:I LOVE THE SELF-CHECK LINE!!!! Heavy stuff used to go in first, unless the customer p*** me off. Then bread, tomatoes, grapes, nice squishy things, went in first. Or all the heavy things went in one bag. Lift this, b-itch.Southern Monkey wrote:I think you need a special degree for that or something... Re: People still write checks???
It does seem to be more common in the south. I see it still quite often around here.....hardly ever saw it in Ohio....but I know my mother still uses checks at the stores.
I've very seldom written checks at a store.....normally it's when I didn't have the debit card and the bank was closed to get cash. Very rarely.
We still use checks to pay some bills and to pay for things with the school that you need a 'paper' trail. The schools system charges 3$ if you do a debit or autopayment.

Hmmm...seems we were a bit ahead of the rest of the country with this..Southern Monkey wrote:The Piggly Wigglys down here have acutally installed a thing at the registers where you can pay with your fingerprint!bravedave wrote:But I am all for any means to speed up checkout time.

Seems like a pretty cool idea, but I'm just not sure I want a company with the name "Piggly Wiggly" to have my fingerprints...![]()

Where It Began…
Piggly Wiggly®, America's first true self-service grocery store, was founded in Memphis, Tennessee in 1916 by Clarence Saunders. In grocery stores of that time, shoppers presented their orders to clerks who gathered the goods from the store shelves. Saunders, a flamboyant and innovative man, noticed this method resulted in wasted time and man hours, so he came up with an unheard-of solution that would revolutionize the entire grocery industry: he developed a way for shoppers to serve themselves.
Despite predictions that this new kind of store would fail, the first Piggly Wiggly opened September 6, 1916 at 79 Jefferson Street in Memphis. Operating under the unusual name Piggly Wiggly, it was unlike any other grocery store of that time. Shopping baskets, open shelves, no clerks to shop for the customer -- unheard of!
Piggly Wiggly Corporation, established by Saunders when he opened the first store in Memphis, secured the self-service format and issued franchises to hundreds of grocery retailers for the operation of Piggly Wiggly stores.

Geeze....I only use a credit card in an emergency...or when traveling.
When I use a check, it doesn't take any longer than using a credit card.
And I have a debit card, but after all the fraud with THOSE, I may cut it up.
I HATE to pay for food (for something that ends up in the septic tank). It's simply a mental thing....but when I saw our local Sonic with a credit card swiper on the microphone/choice stand, I rolled my eyes.
But it's a college town and prolly the kids have to eat with Mom and Dad's credit card.

FYI you can save at least $70 a year on postage and checks by using online banking. You go down the list, type in how much you want to pay for each payor, hit "pay" and your done. Five minutes tops. And they keep all your records for you. I still have the original checkbook the bank sent me when I opened the account over two years ago. Can't remember the last time I bought a stamp.
