Hoot Release Date Moved to May 5th

Post by phjim »

Variety reports that New Line is pushing back the release of "Hoot" for two weeks, dating its opening on May 5 against Paramont's "Mission: Impossible III."

The studio made the move in order to take advantage of the availability of Jimmy Buffett, who's contributing original music to the picture.

Update: The official Hoot website for the movie has confirmed the new release date of May 5th.

I wonder if that's going to affect Jimmy's participation in the NOLA Jazz Festival.

I hope not. Tho, why they would want to take Hoot out on MI:3 weekend is beyond me. Not what I would call the best chance to capture movie bucks.

Wow, the Earth Day link had been a brilliant move for the film. Now they lose that and go up against MI3?? :o Talk about walking away from your prime leverage point to get lost in the shuffle.... :-? Honestly, I'm not sure the trade off is worth it...and I would have thought they'd had that locked up long ago. I'd figured that was part of the plan around JB being in LA for two shows over that weekend...a chance to do some TV appearances, etc. around the movie's release.

Different target audiences.

MI:3 is aimed at fans of an aging action star who has a freakish personal life.

Hoot is aimed at fans of an aging musician who has a freakish fanbase.
And at kids.

You as a consumer certainly know something.... And I think I know a bit, too.

It's almost as though the stars aligned and now they're shaking it all up again just daring it to work. I wouldn't be too happy if I were the other co-producer.... :-? Heck, by early May Earth Day will be a distant memory in the schools because they'll be aiming towards summer vacation...good grief!

Very true, but there's only so much air time and MI will easily dominate just based on history, noise, and action.

I've been working with a Dallas area drive-in to coordinate a phlocking for the movie. They were notified by the distributor yesterday that the date had been moved to May 5th. The New Line Cinema website still shows a release date of 4/21, but maybe it just hasn't been updated yet.
It was a pleasure and a hell of an evening
Truly was our night to win
But the authorities insist on my leaving
Take care my American friend

Week 1: Parrotheads will go see HOOT, instead of MI:3. Others will go see MI:3.

Week 2: Everyone else has now seen MI:3, so they need to go see something else, so they see HOOT. Parrotheads go see HOOT again.

Is it me or isn't there kind of a Tom Cruise backlash lately? I mean with all the couch-jumping, Matt Lauer attacking, Ritalin denouncing, yada-yada-yada.
War of the Worlds sounded interesting, a Spielberg pic and all, but I didn't go because he was in it. I'm sure M3 will have a huge first weekend, but I don't think Hoot ever going to lead the box office receipts, either.

...and won't they probably move up M3 to coincide with the TomKat baby arrival?

Hoot will get niched into "for kids" vs. "for all ages".

And does this mean I can only go once in week 1 :( ...I was thinking Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday or somesuch....

If the release date is being pushed back, does this mean Mailboat Records is producing the movie?

I am sensing an intersection of interest in all this.. Dammit.. if Jimmy would just go back to using Darvon for headaches, we could have a real snaring of the freakish segment... freakish fans of an aging musician with a freakish personal life producing a movie. For kids. :D
