You asked, so here goes:
Somewhere Over China
African Friend
Madamoiselle Volez Vous Danser
All the Ways I Want You
Island
Delaney Talks To Statues
Changing Channels
Pacing the Cage
Something So Feminine About A Mandolin
Anything, Anytime, Anywhere
Coast of Carolina
Remittance Man
Cowboy In the Jungle
Bring Back the Magic
That's What Living Is To Me
L'Aire de Louisiane
Everlasting Moon
Middle of the Night
Souviners
Distantly In Love
In the Shelter
The Captain and the Kid
Beach House On the Moon
Floridays
Nobody Speaks To the Captain No More
If It All Falls Down
No Plane On Sunday
When the Coast Is Clear
Stories We Could Tell
Tin Cup Chalice
Trying To Reason With the Hurricane Season
Come Monday
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
And others
And many I haven't heard yet
Somewhere Over China
African Friend

I pulled out the original version and the one on CILCIA.rednekkPH wrote:Unfortunately, neither of the re-recordings did the original justice.conched wrote:It's very thought-provoking and important enough to Jimmy to go back and re-record.tullrocks wrote:I was just wondering if there was a thread about Jimmy's tender songs. I believe that the most haunting melody that sticks in my mind would be "In The Shelter." It is a depressing song lyric-wise but is amazing musically. Whatever it is about this song. I really Love it. Stated simply.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks, Randy.
So, tell me about those background vocals on the original recording. I keep hearing female, but I must be mistaken??
I love the strings. And yes, that is a beautiful, haunting version of In The Shelter. The best.
(But then, followed by Death Valley Lives---it just doesn't fit.)
CILCIA version has such great piano and strong percussion and guitars, (I like the subtle lead guitar and Fingers on harmonica) but I miss the background vocals. Still a soulful version and Jimmy's voice is so strong.
(I like the way it is followed by Miss You So Badly on CILCIA.)
Anyone who doesn't like In The Shelter from MMIM must not appreciate anything Jimmy has done since he formed the big band. The reggae version features a little bit of everybody in the band, except the horns. Jimmy's voice is still beautiful after all these many years, and he does a good job having the reggae inflection in his voice, as do the female vocalists. (Lord, I just don't know but I can't go back home.)
Listening to the original version of Havana Daydreamin, following In The Shelter on MMIM, sounds like it could be the present Coral Reefer Band. They do so well on that song.

I just don't like the lyrical change in the subsequent versions. That one little word really changes the whole song for me.conched wrote:I pulled out the original version and the one on CILCIA.rednekkPH wrote:Unfortunately, neither of the re-recordings did the original justice.conched wrote:It's very thought-provoking and important enough to Jimmy to go back and re-record.tullrocks wrote:I was just wondering if there was a thread about Jimmy's tender songs. As for the MIMM version, it's not that I don't appreciate the big band stuff, I just like the minimalistic sound better.

I know I'm not good at details, but what one word is it? I will go back and listen again, but it's nevered been pointed out to me.rednekkPH wrote:

She sits on the big grey rocks
Takes off her boots and socks
And knowing what she will do next, just starts to cry
Subsequet versions:
She sits on the big grey rocks
Takes off her boots and socks
Not knowing what she will do next, just starts to cry
It's been debated in here before, but I think that little change really changes the outcome of the song. But that's just my interpretation.
