GREYHOUND ADOPTION
We recently adopted a retired greyhound, and I thought that maybe others out there may have stories, suggestions, recipes etc. regarding these loving, graceful animals.
We purchased "Greyhounds for dummies" as we have heard that greyhounds are very different from "normal" dogs. We have found that many of the traits greyhounds supposedly have, just doesn't fit ours. He barks, is very protective, doesn't counter surf, and does shed (a little).
If anyone is, thinking of adopting an animal I would highly recommend a greyhound, you don't even need too much space!

My good friend Paula has adopted 5 or 6 through the years. I think she currently has 3.
Also, the Arizona PHC does a lot of work with Adopt-A-Greyhound....contact them if you need info!!! http://www.parrotheads.org/

watch your dog very closely around small furry doggies. the petsmart i go to has had problems with one retired greyhound racer that comes for adoption days.
chasing small furry things is so ingrained in him that he's chased/attacked a couple of little rat dogs in the store. he's great with people and little kids but little furry dogs just throws a switch in his little brain...

that's one of my biggest worries. we have some neighborhood bunnies that i think would become snack foods if we adopted a greyhound.AlbatrossFlyer wrote:

Lots of dogs have a really strong prey drive....you just have to be dilligent in keeping your dog and perceive prey apart.
My two jack russells would slaughter a small furry animal (probably even a baby seal) in a heartbeat given the opportunity.
Greyhounds are such beautiful, regal looking dogs. I've thought about it in the past, too.....

he's the only one that's ever exhibited the trait with the retired racers up for adoption, but now the adoption association tests all the dogs for it.buffettbride wrote:that's one of my biggest worries. we have some neighborhood bunnies that i think would become snack foods if we adopted a greyhound.AlbatrossFlyer wrote:

i've checked the colorado greyhound adoption site. is that what they mean when it says the dog is "cat friendly"?AlbatrossFlyer wrote:he's the only one that's ever exhibited the trait with the retired racers up for adoption, but now the adoption association tests all the dogs for it.buffettbride wrote:that's one of my biggest worries. we have some neighborhood bunnies that i think would become snack foods if we adopted a greyhound.AlbatrossFlyer wrote:

i'm sure most of our neighbors wouldn't be sad if there were some garden-eating bunnies eliminated, but my kids would simply have a fit about it!

I hear that if they get that opposable paw thing worked out, Jack Russells'd club a baby seal in a heartbeat.pbans wrote:Lots of dogs have a really strong prey drive....you just have to be dilligent in keeping your dog and perceive prey apart.

My aunt has had 3 retired racers- they are all the best dogs, but they're not usually cat (or other small furry animals that run away- and the furry kitty tends to run scared close to the ground, so he does look like bait) friendly. I would get a few in a heartbeat, but I couldn't risk the kitties.
