Any gardeners?

Post by OceanCityGirl »

A seed catalog came and I get so excited. One of the prices I pay for living at the shore is lack of a yard. But I try to maximize my deck space. I'll put some flowers in the window boxes. Then I have at least two big pots of herbs. I'll do some tomatoes in pots and maybe some climbing beans on the balcony trellis. Oh and some hot pepperss for mr oc.
I'm going to go online for some good seed sites.
Does anybody on here have the right mint for mojitos. I'd love to get a bit to put in a pot. I'm not sure what is the right kind but I know I didn't have it.

Sorry...OCG...I did have...mint and lemon mint..but I left it in Oklahoma...

I loved to mow or weed eat some of it when I mowed.. it can get quite invasive when left to its own..

try a pot of rosemary...very aromatic and you can cook with it too..and grows really well, taken inside during the winter it makes the house smell good, too

I've dealt with out of control mint before. If you edge your mint area with bricks that are a couple inches down into the soil that can help contain it.
I always grow rosemary also tarragon, sage, basil and whatever else looks good.

I had two huge pots of lavendar on each side of the steps to the pool, also..I've never grown tarragon, but have sage and several kinds of basil..and the deer loved my fennel...they'd leave nothing but the stalks..

The recipes I've seen, if they specify at all, suggest spearmint. But most don't seem to distinguish between one variety and another.
I even saw one recipe that used basil for a mojito.
Whatever floats your boat.

btw - look up the town of Richland in your home state.
Some interesting crop formations there.

A couple of places come to mind Burpee's and Parks.
I enclosed the links for them. You probably already have them though.

I have dealt mainly with Burpee's over the years and always had good results.
Far as I know both still snail mail catalogoues.
Keep the hot peppers away from the tomatoes or you will get a real surprise.
Two or Three "cherry tomato" type plants should keep you busy while they are producing, if you like the small tomatoes.
Sometimes one of the grocery stores here, will have herb plants for sale.

Herbs work great in pots...(it's the best way I've found to control mint).

My only issue is a lack of sunshine...a very shady yard...hence the 50+ leaf bags off 1/5 acre in the fall.

It is fun to think about getting back out into the yard again soon, though. :)

I grew spearmint last year and that worked well for mojitos.

Funny story....my friend lives in the islands and comes home in the summer. Well I had introduced her to mojitos. She loved em. So we wanted them for the Buffett concert last year. So I thought it would be a great idea to make them in a bucket, like you do the margaritas. Well, lets go over the ingredients again....mint, simple syrup, lime, tequila/rum. OK...well when you make these in a bucket you can only use so much lime and simple syrup and of course, I'm not measuring a thing. Soo.....we get to the lot and fill our big insulated corona jugs and begin drinking. Yeah...needless to say they were a lil strong... and we drove to SC the next day. Never again. She swears I was trying to kill her. It was fun tho

If you use catnip, they taste funny (I swear, CiP served me a catnip mojito one evening- but unless you really know what you're looking at and are paying attention, it's hard to tell the difference).

Mint (Mentha piperita) Perennial

http://www.wildseedfarms.com/herbs2.html

Aggie Girl sent a good site to order seed.

http://www.buffettnews.com/forum/viewto ... c&start=20

That's a link to a discussion about it before.

pm me your address and I'll send you a bunch to plant.

You may also want to try a Key Lime in a container. They are so easy to grow and you can move them in for winter to save them.

Here is a site about Limequats. It's a cross between Key Lime and Kumquats.
