Hoot and Flush both have been read by all the adults and keets (hard to tell them apart most times) in our house. Can't wait for a new one! Carl better be at his computer writing.

I have become hooked on Hiaasen! Hoot & Flush were cute...but my favorite Hiaasen is Tourist Season, form whence JB got the idea for the song "The Legend of Skip Wiley" (You can't steal the Orange Bowl Queen...)
I also loved Skinny Dip...the ultimate female revenge on the cheating husband! LOL
It's a shame that non Buffett fans think of him as only Margaritaville...through JB I have been introduced to many great authors, not to mention revisiting the works of Twain.

I agree. Buffett's music turned me onto reading. When I was seventeen, I read Tales from Margaritaville, and from there went to The Songlines and from there I haven't stopped reading. I never have less than three or four books in my "to read next" pile. And I even got my degree in English Lit.

Finished it last night at the airport. Trying to place the images in my minds eye how the movie will turn out. In a few weeks someone will start the, “What was better, HOOT the book or HOOT the movie” post.

Impressive! I ALWAYS have 4 or more books going at the same time. I read depending on my mood. All those books on the nightstand rives my wife crazy…. :-?

Carl is a great writer and developer of characters. Not intereasted in reading Striptease because the movie sucked so bad.
IMHO the book was MUCH better than the movie! Give it a read and you'll see for yourself.

yeah that part...that's what I like best about what I've read...I'm behind though, Skinny Dip was the last one I read...
His novels are great, but I was talking about non-fiction Miami Herald columns. He has even written a critical piece about his own boss and got away with it!

Tequila Revenge, do yourself a favor and read Striptease. The book is classic Carl. I didn't watch the movie BECAUSE I had read the book.

I watched part of it before I stated to read Carl and stopped. Thought it was pretty stupid. After packing away about four books I could hear Carl's character development and naration of the story in the back of my mind. The the movie was OK.

HOOT should be a little easier. Less sleazy characters, but I still wouldn't want to try to adapt one of his books into a movie.

I just picked up Skinny Dip, and will probably knock it off in a week or two. Like others, I regularly have two or three books on my bedside table, and can credit JB as an inspiration for many of the books I have read.

I read the book and don't understand why in the trailer Mr. Ryan (JB's character) seems bothered that Roy Eberhardt is in his class!!
What if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

It is such a short clip, that it's really hard to tell that Mr Ryan REALLY seems bothered, but I agree that there is a certain look when he says..."let me guess" and then gets laughter from the whole class.

Could it be that there has already been talk and making fun of the new kid from Montana?

It could be the clothes Roy has on. Sometimes we judge people, who look different from us...you know, that western, ranch look of Roy's clothes.

Let's hope that the segment in the movie doesn't really make it look like the teacher is making fun of the new student too and making a joke at his expense to entertain the class.

And, if that is the case, maybe it is directed that way for the PURPOSE of leading to discussions about making fun and stereotyping.

This is supposed to be a movie for kids to dissect, discuss, write about, analyze and internalize and benefit from by interecting with their classmates.

I guess we'll find out other ways to use it as a teaching tool, besides the obvious environmental issues, bullying issues, and empowerment of youngsters to be proactive.

I read all of them in order, and I'm glad I did. As time goes on, they just seemed to get more and more "out there," and I may not have enjoyed them as much if I had read the latest one earlier.

Skinny Dip was one of my favorites. It reminded me most of MacDonald's Travis McGee series.

Hoot was great finished it in a day. My son is reading it now can’t wait to compare notes on what was what was our favorite part and once the movie is out what was different from the book. Porta-johns and rubber snakes will top the list I promises.

Heading to my local mega bookstore on my lunch break looking for my next Hiaasen book any suggestions?

Can't go wrong! Space the books out over time. Mix in a few of Dorsey's to make the insanity last longer. Try Skin Tight or Tourist Season. :D :D :D Watch out for the Sh*tweasels!!! :D :D :o
