Just Finished "Hoot"

Very easy read, which makes sense since it is geard towards teenagers. Thought it was good, laughed out loud a couple of times. Will definitely read other books by Carl Haissan (sp). It will be interesting to see how the screen play is adapted.

Anyone else read it?

One other thing. Trouble Dolls - Anyone else think that it is weird that the mother is dead? My 2 year old daughter loves to read it at night, but I find myself skipping the parts that mention the girls mother. (Gotta wonder how Jane felt about that one too, since it is clear that the father's character is somewhat autobiographical.)

I read Hoot, daughter (14) read it, son (9) is reading it now. Excellent for adventurous kids, like mine. I've read all Hiasson's books and enjoy them all.

My daughter is reading it now, although she's on a brief break from it because she had to read some Laura Ingalls Wilder stuff for a school report. She's 8 and so far she has enjoyed it. Once she finishes her other book, I'm sure she'll pick it right back up again.

Are you calling today's teenagers simple-minded?

Have read all of Carl Hiaasen's books, even the 2 compilations of his Miami Herald columns. If you laughed out loud with Hoot, you will definitely enjoy his adult material. I also read Flush, his other "young reader" novel, and it is a good one too.

The counselor at school used it to help kids deal with problems. I remember thinking how good it was, like a self-help book for youngsters, but I'll have to go back and read it again. (Do you think it might teach escape? )

I read it with my seventh graders two years ago. Taught eight grade last year, and thought it was geared towards younger kids. This year read it with sixth graders. Perfect for them.

Half way through HOOT! The guy sitting next to me on the plane started reading it over my shoulder and asking questions..... :-?

Carl is a great writer and developer of characters. Not intereasted in reading Striptease because the movie sucked so bad.

Bought Hoot when it first came out, same with Flush. Loved them both, but that's not a surprise, they are right up my alley. :D

Yes, a very critical look at a corporation Carl has shown a disdain for from day one. If you like that, read Paradise Screwed and Kick Ass. These are the compilations of his columns. If you do, or have, lived in South Florida (like he has all his life) you will appreciate his skewering of the spineless politicians who give in to the greedy developers time and time again, among other topics.
