Syndicated radio DJs John Boy and Billy loved to rag on him about something involving one of his Charlotte concerts that dates back many years but I don't recall any of the details off hand.
I was at that Charlotte show and can shed some light on what happened...I believe it was the 1989 concert at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. I was a listener at that time of the John Boy and Billy show during the am drive time. I even used to call in to request Buffett songs which they would play from time to time. At this particular concert, John Boy and Billy got to the concert late - almost at the intermission, very drunk, thereby missing a lot of the show. ( I was sitting about 8 rows below their seats and saw them arrive) Into the second set I was watching Jimmy through my binoculars and saw an empty Jack Daniels bottle land at his bare feet - thrown by a drunk fan I'm guessing! JB finished that song, played one or two more and left the stage!!! He did not finish the set and played only about 19 songs that year. I didn't blame him as I would not have stood there playing and with bottles thrown at me!!! In their inebriated state John Boy and Billy probably never know what had happened and talked trash about the short concert the next day on air. Of course, they didn't note that they arrived late- only that JB didn't play long! I was, meanwhile, on my way to Myrtle Beach that next morning and since this was in the days before cell phones, never called them to tell what I saw...I also never listened to their show again!!! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!

That sounds about right for "Dumb Boy & Silly" (as they're known around here). I think they've since apologized to Buffett on-air but I quit listening long ago too but it didn't have to do with the Buffett incident. Someone needs to tell 'em you don't laugh at your own jokes and their comedy "routines" grow incredibily stale with just one listen, much less repeating them ad nauseum.

I remember when the Raleigh rock station (96.1) put them on in the morning.....talk about a 'what are they thinking' sort of move!
Can't say the current morning show is any better...but we have Sirus now so who cares.

I used to be an avid listener to WRDU out of Raleigh and already working at a station that carried Dumb Boy & Silly, I knew what would happen once they started carrying the show. I figured it would steal their identity, and it did. I guess it took them years to figure this out but they finally dropped them. They were also being carried by several other stations in the area so the option of choice was missing. I have nothing against the "Morning Zoo" type radio shows, particularly when they originated from just one station but when everything became syndicated and every station starting carrying a lot of the same shows I didn't even see a need to turn on the radio in the mornings.

I quit listening to commercial radio years ago and switched to NPR. Our local NPR affiliate isn't very adventurous though so other than listening in the mornings and the evenings, I wasn't attracted to much of their other programming (which is mostly classical) I too switched over to satellite radio. I haven't looked back since...

Now im sure some of the Band members love him 100%, but not all, none that i am aware of, But there are a lot of them i dont know.
If you want to be able to say you work in JB's band on your resume,
or that you did extensive work on his boat, etc., well....you zip up.
its all apart of the game. It's called- Using each other. We all do it, every day in this life.
When we are around someone, anyone, immediate family, co-workers etc, generally, eventually, if you get close enough for a long time, you will take the good for granted and the bad will work its way to the top. Thats just one womans opinion.

In talking with JB myself, i found him to be (at that moment) a humorless old pain in the butt. Ok, so what if he's a pri_k boss...so am i. And damn proud of it. I am a capitalist...so is he!

He's a "big star" hanging with Trump and Gates and others.
i know people worth $100 millon and are the cheapest, tight wads on this earth. I will never understand that. Jimmy does help a lot of people though, and gives to charities.

Absolutely "money changes everything"
But don't always assume its the person getting the money that changes (entirely) many if not most times, its the people around you that change how they act/feel toward you.
In my opinion, the rich "tightwads" as you refer to them, usually worked very hard to get what they have. Not always though, example- being a lottery winner. They usually have a lot of issues/problems after they get their money. Its the ones that worked hard and came from nothing that appreciate what they have and many fear losing it. Fear, its what a makes them live like paupers sometimes and die wealthy leaving it to...not them!
Some give large sums away privately, trying to remain anonymnous so as to not be approached constatntly to give more. They like to give, but be in control of it. Some dont give at all.
Fear and guilt have big rolls. In my opinion, the reason Movie stars and their ilk like to go out and ask you to give to their pet charities is guilt. They feel guilty that they have what they have and really didnt accumulate it by years of blood, sweat, tears, and passion, i.e. 20 million dollars to make a movie. The conflict of liberal and conservative / socialist capitalist can be examined in here. Ted Kennedy, Al Gore, Michael Moore...guilt, asks for your money, yet doesnt like to part with their own.
A typical conservative that "made himself" may be more thought of as the type to be busy working for his money and gives privatley directly to a particular group(s) of their choice.
waiver: This is my opinion and merely an example. in some cases you can swap the names around...but unlikely :O)

First, I don't know Jimmy, so this is speculation...
I've noticed that many of the Coral Reefers are long-time members of the band. In any organization I've ever seen or been associated with, that doesn't happen if the boss is a complete jerk. Demanding, yes. High expectations, yes. Tough on you at times, yes. But complete, back-stabbing, unreasonable jerk? No.
Strangely enough, being tough and demanding are the qualities that make people admire/respect the boss, and often, those people end up being loyal, long-term employees.
I'm sure Jimmy can be demanding, tough, and will tear into you if you screw up. I bet, though, he also takes care of his people, backs them when necessary, and appreciates what they do for him.
Sounds like a good boss to me... and having made a kajillion dollars, it seems to be working.

If your job is
THAT bad, you should find your nuts and quit. If you're a talented enough musician, you'd be able to find work elsewhere... This applies to all walks of life, not just working for JB...

This has to be one of the biggest crocks of sh*t I've ever read on this board and I've read
plenty. Maybe, just maybe it's not got a damn thing to do with someone being liberal or conserative. Perhaps they'd just like to give something back. I know Buffett donates money to charity, and R.E.M. have donated large sums of money to their hometown of Athens and those are just two examples. I'm sure there's plenty more. I don't think either of those instances have a damn thing to do with guilt.

im sure you're correct. but that wasnt what i was addressing. i was merely making a comment based on personal observation combined with my opinion. sometimes we speak in generalities, sometimes, specifics. one must be able to discern between the two and stick within that realm at times. i also sent out a waiver.
