Mary Winkler told investigators she shot her husband on Wednesday,
Selmer Police investigator Roger Rickman said...
Mary Winkler, 32, was spotted Thursday night with the children as they
left a Waffle House restaurant in Orange Beach, Ala., 340 miles south
of their home.

I guess we weren't expecting anything when we were partying nearby
earlier this month with Mother Hen, huh?

Something tells me that when a motive is finally found.....that 'perfect and charming' family is going to have some deep skeletons in their closet.

My husband thinks the dude was molesting one of the daughters, while I figure he was just beating on her and started in on the kids. Yeah, we are cynics....but you just see it all too often with that type. If no one has anything bad to say about you.....your hiding something.

Those are my primary guesses, too...
All that "charisma" is a bit too creepy for me as well.
At least she didn't feel it necessary to drown the kids.

you know... we had breakfast in that Waffle House after Live Bait Friday night at Stars..

and you are right Des.. I am guessing it was one of the following:

a) he had been beating her (she hit the end of her fuse sooner than some)
b) he was molesting one or more of the kids
c) another old standby: he was sleeping around on her with parishoners.

and as everyone has said, that much good said in a situation like this means there has to be something pretty nasty just under the surface.

There is a Waffle House in the town I work...never been there but I do know it keeps getting robbed.

There is just something about a Waffle House that always seem surreal.

Not sure about the theory he was sleeping around the parish.....there would be talk.....that sort of thing doesn't stay quiet.

One of the worst sexual abuse stories here locally was where "the best
scout leader we ever had" was found to have been molesting several of the
boys in the troop. The parents' reaction was overwhelmingly one of sadness...
that they had lost that "great scoutmaster". Unbelieveable!

That "charisma" is handy for more than one purpose. I've had to fend off
popular ministers in my day.

We have a Waffle House on almost every corner in this part of the country.

If the FBI raided every Waffle House at 2AM it could clean up it's most wanted list.

Man Accused Of Raping Girl He Met In Church
Suspect Ordered To Stay Away From Children

POSTED: 4:21 pm EST March 24, 2006
UPDATED: 5:37 pm EST March 24, 2006

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police said a man met a girl in church and repeatedly molested her over a six-week period.

David Wesley Tillis was arraigned in Franklin County Municipal court on Friday, NBC 4 reported.

The 23-year-old man was charged with three counts of rape against a minor.

Police said he had a 12-year-old girl perform oral sex on him repeatedly. Officials said he met the girl at a church youth group where he worked.

"Really, in the whole scheme of things, (these cases are) rare. Hopefully, the churches, whoever hires these people that have to handle children, by law, they are required to have a background check and fingerprints done on these people," said Betty Schwab, of Columbus police.

Tillis' bond was set at $500,000, and he was ordered to not have contact with minors.

Watch NBC 4 and refresh nbc4i.com for additional information.

RARE??? Oh, really...

Pastor in jail, accused of parole breach in sex case
http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/s ... 2933.shtml

A Jacksonville pastor who confessed to an affair with a 13-year-old in March
was arrested Friday on charges of violating his parole.

According to the police report, Alexie Kelly, pastor of Little Rock Baptist
Church on Van Buren Street, contacted the victim either directly or indirectly.
Police learned of the contact during Kelly's therapy session.

Kelly, 35, remains in jail on no bail.

And again...

The girl's mother asked the judge for probation, telling him that no good
would come from sending Kelly to prison.

Why are these children and their safety and innocence considered expendable???
I guess I just don't "get it".

I agree with many of you.... right or wrong.....this woman just didnt kill her husband for no reason.... My guesses also are:

1/sexual abuse w/ the kids
2/battered wife syndrome
3/or the ever popular sleeping with a church member...

Have a minister in the family... I know they are human. And personally knowing 2 ministers who wronged... one had an affair with the church secretary for 10 years (granted his wife WAS a b**** but geez) and the other hung himself in the balcony of the church after having an affair with the wife of a couple he was offering marriage counseling  .... We found him on Sunday morning!!

Men of the cloth are not perfect. They are no different that anyone else. And IMO.. this gal snapped for whatever reason.

And just as a footnote... all clergy isnt bad! All cops arent bad. All coal miners arent bad... but the ones that are, sometimes overshadow the ones that arent unfortunalty. :(

Even in our small, itty bitty town we had a child molester here. He volunteered with the ballpark, as a coach for little leagues and as an umpire. He always hang around kids, didn't seem to date or anything.
We need to keep our eyes open.....child molesters seek out jobs and pastimes that have to do with children.

I certainly wasn't trying to vilify all clergy. I just wanted to say that often
those "best ever" "well loved" "charismatic" people we put so much trust in
are the ones capable of the most harm to the most vulnerable. Teachers,
pastors, scout leaders, youth coaches, church deacons, police officers, etc.,
all hold jobs the rest of us are glad someone else is doing. But that doesn't
make them trustworthy. Trust them the way you would the ice cream man.

My real rant is against parents who ignore the fact that their children have
been seriously harmed and continue to praise the "wonderful" molesters.

Or, option 4- the wife went off her meds and snapped. It could be something horrible under the surface, but that doesn't necessarily mean under the surface of the pastor.

Well, if she would have beaten the crap out of him but not killed him, that would have been his fault, but to out and out whack him? She could have a few missing screws, not just one loose one.

It looks like this may be a very possible option.

E-mail No. 3 — This is an interesting e-mail. I can't vouch for the content
since I have not corroborated the assertions, but include it for you to
review:

Greta,
To get some insight into Mary Winkler's motive you might want to check
into her medical background. I think that you will find among other things
she suffers from Lupus. I also think that you will find she has been treated
for either a bipolar disorder or manic depression.
In the last two or three years she had a miscarriage. She lost her mother
in the last two years. She gave birth to a child in the last 13 months. Her
husband went from being a youth minister's husband to being the wife of a
full-time congregational minister. She moved to a new location. All of these
things are extremely stressful.
I would also check into when she and her husband were in Nashville, and
he was a youth minister there. I would check to see if there were any
incidents of outbreaks of anger on her part, and if there was a medical
reason for this.
It is my belief that there are good medical reasons for her actions. I also
believe that her motive was based on perceptions that were not based in
reality. I would want to know if she was taking medication prescribed for
her.
I do not know Mary, but I know her husband's family, and I knew Matt. I
know many people who knew Mary and Matt well, and worked with them
over the last five years. Matt and his family are the best of people.

And as I said initially, at least she didn't see the need to drown the children.

(And yes, Lar, somewhere there is always a man to blame! :P )
