YEAH, considering I was kicked off line THREE TIMES between the two previous posts of mine.
This P.O.S. has been like that ever since I got it last year. But today it's even worse than usual. Plus it's just D^MN SLOW lately.
Probably not a big deal, but I'm sick of it already.
That doesn't necessarily mean it's the machine itself. It could be anything from needing defragged, to the connection, to a conflict with software, and so on and so on.

Technically, compaq, dell, toshiba, etc etc are all made from the same brands and parts in the end, they are just branded with a name and marketed.

Dell's always been good to me. I have four of them sitting around me, and work exclusively with their laptops and desktops at work. Once you know how to get past their first level support, too, it's not so bad :)

Thanks, everyone.
As I said, it's probably not a major crisis, other than the aggrevation, but when you're as technologically challenged as I am, the anger tends to make it's presence a bit earlier than a NORMAL person.
Our Information Security guy from work coming over Wednesday to figure it out for me. If he can't fix the problem, nobody can.
The company I bought the computer from is a VERY reputable place in town, and when I told them of the problems, they said it may be my I.S.P., so who knows.

Hang in there, Garry. :) Computers CAN be frustrating at times, as they depend on many factors to work properly. Your ISP, keeping Spyware out, keeping the virus protection up-to-date.

I have an almost 2 year old Dell, and have never had a problem with the machine itself. :)

Garry,
Bro, WELCOME TO DELL HELL!!!
Your dropping of connection could be something as simple from an Init String ( simple enough to correct) to the server is having problems to the modem has decided to take a vacation , However since it dropped 3 times and comes back.....my guess is that it is your server or perhaps drivers have been upgraded for your modem.... Have you had this problem long with the involved computer?

I know of quite a few people that got involvrd with Dell Hell and had quite a bit of fun getting the assistance they needed. Also like some have posted in here.... I know a few that had no probs with them.

BTW have you had a lot of rain up there lately? It is possible water could be getting into your phone lines.......You can have the phone company do a line check for free.........should be for free anyway.

BEST OF LUCK ~~~ !!!

Sam & Penny:
It's been doing this since I bought the thing back in November.
I'm just going to live with it until our Information Security Officer from work comes over Wednesday. If HE can't fix the problem, it can't be fixed.
Again, thanks to all for putting up with me.

Time to hit the sack-4:30 AM comes pretty early.

Garry ,
Bro, since it has been going on that long................hmmmm probably an Init string or a driver issue or noise on your phone line are my best guesses from here. Noise on the phone line are up to you have your phone company check out. Dell Hell Tech support or your server should be able to help with the init strings or tell you how to solve the driver issues IF THOSE are THE PROBLEM.

Whish I could tell you more and be of more help, about the situation.

I know first hand just how bad that SUX. If you want, I can use my elephant gun to guarantee a fix to the problem. ( Of course the computer won't be of any use again ....but then again...it is not being of any use at the time. You decide.....

Try this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... layLang=en

Or this: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Per ... l&tag=top5

There's a possibility it may be your ISP, do you use a modem of any sort? (cable/DSL) If so, try unplugging it from the wall for about 30 seconds, then plugging it back in. Forces it to reboot, sometimes they get wonky.

I used to have a crappy computer. I bought it from the Home Shopping Network  Then I figured out how easy manufacturer's have made it it to buy quality parts and put one together. I love custom builts. I dont even have the option to talk with someone who can't speak my native language very well.

Gary, although I agree with your thread title, it doesnt sound like you're having hardware problems. I bet the IS guy coming over will be able to figure out the main problem for you. If not, I'll build one for you, I have fun doing it!!

could it be... SPYWARE... :D

if you weren't downloading all the smileys and screensavers, and the P2P sharing programs... :)

(actually, I know how you feel, tho mine was a case of trying to install AOL on the same machine as their beta AIM Triton software... seems that one or the other is good. Together they just turn a machine into a paperweight; but it took me two drinks and a pipe of good tobacco to figure out the solution without having to format the HD and start from scratch).

Until Wednesday, you can try this website:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
This will look for spyware, adware, worms, trojans (not those) and anything else that ails ya. It's free but you will need some disk space for it. Real easy thing to try first is to hit ctrl-alt-del and choose "Task Manager". Go to Processes and look for any names with the word Spy in it. Click on them and hit "end process".
Another easy thing is right click on the Start button and select open. You should see a folder called programs in your start menu. If you see another file that has the word spy in it, delete it. This will not rid you of anything, but it should stop the thing from loading when you reboot.
Other than that, wait for Wednesday.

I could get to about 3 websites, and then it was saying website not found, and I knew the address was good ANd I have a cable modem. Come to find out, Zone Alarm got reconfig somehow, and wasn't letting my own IP out. Once I deleted it, and then redownloaded the newer version all is well.

Have you put any new software on lately?

I'm on my 4th Dell and never had a problem with any of them to speak of. When I've had minor problems I've call tech support, waited less than 15 minutes and had my problem resolved each time.

well if you're tired of virus protection not working/updating, spyware problems, blue screen of death, and frankly using a 2nd rate system that includes NOTHING for intergrated software that is amazing and simply works, then it's time for the switch. Be good to yourself.....

I have to agree with you, there!
Mine is a custom built, too....it was a lot cheaper, too.....
The only problems I've ever had have been operator error!

Assuming you have dsl, since I didn't read all this, I have heard there are simple conflicts such as:

Some 900 MHz phones and halogen lamps may interfere with a DSL signal. If you are using either of these devices, try unplugging them. ...

http://www.earthlink.net/biz/highspeed/ ... kStart.pdf

Don't know if this might help, but maybe you can share it with your IT person from work who is helping you. This is just info in general and I know it has been done to trouble-shoot for others.

I hope you get happy with your computer again. :)
