Garry,

Dell made me mad; I had money to buy a new computer and went to Dell for one of their advertised deals; false advertising, every thing was extra, silly things like software. So I bought elsewhere. No Dell for me.

I really REALLY should've taken the advice somebody gave me a long time ago-simply, you get what you pay for.
I tried saving a few bucks, and what I didn't spend in dollars, I'm paying for in blood pressure.

OK, I'll leap on this soapbox! I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop and I love it! I'm presently on the road (Days Inn in Boonville, MO) and it's working just fine!

The computers may be fine, but where I was the customer service was terrible. You need to be nice or at least, civil for me to give you my hard-earned money.

Sorry you had that experience-I have had good dealings with them. Checked the online deals weekly until the one that I wanted came up, got it when they said I would, have had almost no trouble with it in 18 months, and got good customer service when I did need to call for help (though I know that can vary greatly).

Just thought I would report on my latest Dell experience:

my Dell laptop that I have had less than 2 years developed a problem a week or two ago--once the computer had been running for about 15 minutes, the fan would start making noise, and the computer would get very very hot. Fortunately, I took out a complete extended service policy, including in home service.

Called on Friday around noon and spoke to a woman in India--we ran diagnostics, she took over my computer (I find that amazing that can be done!), upgraded some things, and told me she had ordered parts for it, that I would be getting a call, probably Tuesday or Wednesday to schedule an in home appointment for the repair. And she gave me an extension to be able to reach her again should I need to.

Well, at noon today (Monday) they called. I returned the call at 2pm, and the guy was at my house 45 minutes later. He spent about 40 minutes taking my computer apart, installing the new parts, and reassembling it, and it is fine.

I have to admit I am pretty stunned at the efficiency of the service I received!

I'll take my Mac Quicksilver EVERY day!!

You don't pay for an extended warranty, because they don't break!
5 years on my first, almost 5 years on my current one.

Not 'a one disasterous HD failure :P

I'm sure someone has broke one of 'em somewhere, but my money spent
for piece mind and NO DOWN TIME is WELL WORTH IT!

Ohh, a Dell thread..just what I need.

I think Dell is pretty hit and miss. Tech support is great if you have a clue about computers, but they aren't too patient with older folks who don't. And I agree with BHC...there is some false advertising going on. I perused their ads weekly for a new puter for my folks, we finally picked out a package but what they ended up with was no where near what was advertised. They definitely took advantage of my Mom's lack on knowledge.

Now her printer is shot, and it's only a year old. After blowing thru 3 brand new ink cartridges with the same problems (very faint printing) she called tech support only to be told to have her credit card ready because her contract was up. She hung up because she figured it would cost her as much or more as a new printer.

Are Dell computers compatible with other printer brands? I'm thinking she'd be better off just getting one from a local store rather than going thru Dell again. I figure they should be compatible, but I know my Gateway monitor was tweaked so it wasn't compatible with other processors, so I've learned not to assume anything.

Mind you, I'm trying to help her fix the dang thing from 350 miles away. :-?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Unless Dell has recently started something devious, she should be able to use any of the major brand printers. Her computer should have several USB ports and most (if not all) printers have a USB interface. Piece of cake!

I've been reselling Dell computers for 3 years now. I used to sell IBM, Compaq and HP (and Digital - WAY back in the day). Dell has their issues, but the rate of failures are MUCH less than anything else we've sold. If you are dealing with spyware/viruses, that happens to any system. Hardware wise, Dells are the best out there at this point. I've probably purchased/sold close to 5000 in the past year, and we've only had about a 3-5% DOA, compared to the 10-20% from the other brands.

If you have spyware issues, contact me and I'll give you the best remedy to ensure, once clean, you don't have the issues anymore.

Sorry, when Dell advertises those specials, they specifically state on the ad what software it does/does not come with. The fact that you didn't read does NOT mean they were false advertising....

As a Dell reseller, that's one of our biggest headaches. We get calls all the time from people who ask us for a price, then tell us they can get it cheaper through Dell (they can't), due to the "Dell Specials" magazines they send out regularly. We usually get a call back in about an hour, with a credit card number to order it.

The "$300" special from Dell does not include Microsoft Office (it's a couple of hundred bucks alone), and only has XP Home (XP Pro is another $100). The point I am making is that it is not Dell's fault that software is so expensive. Blame Microsoft, blame supply and demand, but nowhere is it Dell's fault.

I will agree with you on this. A year ago Dell outsourced some of the online and phone in support on a few lines (Dimension and Inspiron) to India and the Phillipeans (sp) to make it less expensive for the end user. That's why you can get 3 years of hardware (onsite) and software support from Dell for like $200. The consulting company I own charges $900 per year per PC. How'd you like to tack that onto your new computer purchase price?

We use a mix of Dells, HPs, Compaqs, Gateways and Macs at my work and according to the IS department Dell's service is the one that gives them the most fits. Sometimes everything goes smoothly and sometimes it doesn't and when it doesn't it's a rear pain in the ^$$.

As an example, the power supply went out on one of the Dells in my department. We knew that's what it was when it happened. Called the IS guys, they came over and verified that it was the power supply and that the machine was still covered by the service contract. They then called Dell, who had them run the same tests to determine that it was indeed the power supply, big surprise. They then scheduled a tech to come out and replace it (under our contract they will do this within 24 hours). He showed up the next day with the wrong power supply. He told us that we had to call in again and have a new ticket set up to send out someone with the correct part. So my co-worker called and jumped through the hoops again and had a tech scheduled for the next day. It's the same guy and he brought the same part AGAIN! :o  And he tells us that he can't do anything about this mess until we call it in again. So we tell him not to move while we call it in again. He sticks around about 25 minutes while we are going through all the hoops yet again. At the end of the call his PDA buzzed and he had a new work order for the next morning and it even indicated the correct part!

So three days were wasted because they were sloppy and couldn't go outside of their procedures. When my Compaq started to act up, one call, the service guy was here within the day and he all the parts needed plus extras in case there was something else that they had missed when the did their troubleshooting.

Dell's inkjet printers are rebranded Lexmark printers, for the most part. With a very slight modification to the carriage (breaking a small tab off with a razor blade) you can use standard Lexmark ink you can get at any store, and it is less expensive. I don't sell Dell printers.

As far as replacing the printer, you can put any brand of printer you can get at most office supply stores on the Dell. I personally like HP printers, but don't skimp on the printer. If you buy a $50 printer, you will get a $50 printer. Plan on spending at least $125-$200 to get a printer that will last you several years. Also, when buying a printer, check the cost of ink before you buy the printer. The ink that comes with the printers are only "trial", and are way less than 1/2 full.

I've had to replace many Gateways lately, especially since the local Gateway store went belly up.
