This is a warning for all parents mostly that are raising teen boys in highschool.
I'm sure as you know, Highschool can put alot of pressure on teen boys. Trying to be the most athletic, getting stronger, building muscle, losing weight, and trying to impress that particular girl are all stress factors for teenage boys.
I work at a Highschool as the Athletic Director, and Highschool football coach. During the "Off Season" we start a lifting program as an opportunity for the football players to get stronger for the upcoming season. A particular kid starting taking "muscle enhancing" supplements, and today this kid (during school) had to get rushed to the emergency room. These supplements he was taking did some serious damage to his kidneys. Thankfully, he will be OK.
Not all boys get this lucky. Too many teen boys across America die each year from taking "muscle enhancing" supplements, and the sad part is, parents have no idea that their child is taking them, like this particular boys parents.
I am all for getting physical fit, and there are so many "promising, safe" supplements out there on the market today it is unreal. If you are a parent, and your child is involved in athletics, please take the time to sit down and talk with them about this. In reality these supplements don't do squat except take your money.
Life is too precious to lose just to get stronger.

I coach baseball at the High School level and the pressure on these kids to do well so they can get into a college is tremendous. Whenever a pro or college scout is in the stands you can see the look on their faces. I am blessed to be coaching in a baseball talent rich part of the country so rarely a games passes without a scout on hand. At least once a week I talk to my team about supplements and their dangers. This is a real and honest problem in schools today. I could not agree more that if you are a parent...GET INVOLVED!

Teenage boys tend to be stupid to begin with. Throw in the fact that their idols are mostly known to be doing this stuff. Then add as TSINTC says the pressure is great. They need to understand that even if the stuff did work and didn't hurt them it would raise their performance level. Then when they got to college there would be random testing and definite testing at the championship level.
I have a son running in a d-1 program. He's determined to drop to 2% body fat. And his coach is encouraging this. I think when he's at school his diet is crazy because of this. And at 5'7" and a 135 lbs he thinks he's fat for a runner. If he sits down and a little bit of skin is there he's thinking it's fat.
But they test for alot of things. He can only take a few cold medicines that have to be registered, he can't drink red-bull. He's not supposed to use an inhaler if he's got an upper respiratory thing.
