Cumberland Island to be on ABC Sun Morning

Post by Sam »

Check your local guides for times of the broadcast and set your DVR or your VCR. I don't know how long the segment will be. It is called Good Morning.
The show comes on at 0700 ( 7:00 AM EST)

I have been there many times and also lived and worked over there one summer. Definitely a very beautiful place and it is not referred to "As a place apart." without good reason. I know of quite abit of history of it and seen things many average people never get to see.( I also have a freind or two that live on the island.

ABC was recently in the area and filmed over on Cumberland Island. Cumberland Island is the largest of Georgia's barrier Islands and is also a National Park, though the National Park service does not own all of the Island, so people still live there.
JFK,Jr. was married there and it was featured on The Travel Channel. JB has been known to visit.

Collected a many shark tooth there. :D Pretty cool.

And I was so surprised when I woke up the next morning, (when we lived in St. Mary's) to find out that JFK jr got married over there. What a well kept secret that was!

I had a boat a marina at the time. They were paying the charter boat captains NOT to have a charter that day. They did not approach and make the offer to everyone on the marina, UNFORTUNATELY!!! :-(

Actually it was a best kept secret from the papaprazzi and I loved it. They might be famous people but they still deserve their privacy and anything that happens to paparazzi is nothing but less than what they deserve for intruding an violating personal space and for lack of common decency and respect of others.
While I was living and working on Cumberland Island....a litle kid was bugging one of the co-workers about how and where to "dig" for sharks teeth. He finally got to the guy , and he had enough and he said "Dig right there dammit!" and walked off. The kid pulled out five sharks teeth the size of my/an adult's hand in a matter of minutes.
Sharks teeth ( along with numerous other fossils: gill plates from parrot fish, eo hippis teeth, inner ear bones from early whales, caps from drum's teeth and any numerous others) can be found along the main road as well as on the beach.

BTW, did you happpen to see the show on the The Travel Channel? I forgot to tape it. It was about best beaches or something like that.

The best part is that the NPS limits the numbers of visitors to the island on a given day. Hardly any of them go beyond a certain area and if you go beyond that, it is like being alone on your own private beach. No one near you or around you.
You MUST PACK IN AND PACK OUT what you whatever items you require...food, beverages, sunscreen, whatever....The only concession open on the island is Greyfield Inn. I do not know what their fees are now....but last I heard were well over $400.00 a night.

You can get a room as cheap as $350, but you have to share a bathroom.
I wouls spring for the extra $100 and get a private cottage.

AS to regards to the sharks teeth, makes you wonder just HOW MANY sharks were in those waters with as many teeth all the vistors find each day.

I know the prices vary but they have one great thing in the Hotel there....
The bar works on an Honor policy (or at least it used to.)
It really is worth the money to experience the life for a few days of staying there.

GRINZ... well they come from the bottom of the ocean and dredging the ICW channel, many years ago. Remember most of the southeast and very far inland were at the bottom of the sea at the time those sharks and other critters existed.

Thanks for the Cumberland Island alert and the web sites to look at such a beautiful area. I'll be sure to watch. That oak alley is gorgeous.

I went to the junkiest beach in Texas today--wiped out so many times by hurricanes, tropical storms, and beach erosion-- but IT was SIMPLY beautiful to me.

You are more than welcome. If you ever decide to "Head East" let me know and I will see what I can do about getting you over there for a visit. Bring lots of film/memory cards and Charged batteries for your camera.

I have no idea of where or what they filmed or how much will be shown. But I know that there is nothing like actually being on Cumberland and actually experiencing it.....Many people believe it is a very powerful and spiritual place. It is definitely a beautiful and peaceful place...and worth the experience.

If you want, PM me and I can send you some other links on it.

So can you get there by boat from your Fernandina, Connie? Or is it a long, long way, eventhough it looks close? Or can you only get on the island at certain entries? I guess it's not private?

I'll just have to watch the ABC thing...

I guess I found my answer here.

The public is also welcome to visit Cumberland Island, which was also home to some opulent mansions. However, today the island is primarily owned by the park service, which is allowing the island to return to a natural state. Access to the island is by ferry, and only 300 visitors are allowed on the island at a time.

Sorry I missed your response in here... but to answer your question...YES YOU CAN get their by private boat from Fernandina or St. Marys or by traveling up or down the ICW.

Dock space is limited and they only allow small boats or dinghies to tie up.

They have instituted a fee to get onto the Island itself. ( I think it is $4.00 not sure but I can check easily enough).

St. Marys to Fernandina is about a 12-15 minute boat ride and about the same to Cumberland Island. That is in a boat that will run about 35-40 mph.... Depending on where you leave Fernandina from ( Egans Creek or Fernandina Harbor it might take about 10 mins or less to get there ( have to clear no wake zones along the way.) Pretty much a straight shot across the sound and you are there.
There is a favorite fishing spot right off the south end of Cumberland Island called the Whiting drop. people often ( or used to) beach their boats on the south end and picnic and whatever on the beach. I would not reccommend swimming there because of the current. However swimming has been done there but be aware of the current.

Hmmm what else can I tell you of the Island and the area. Hmmmm Fort Clinch State Park is across the river on Amelia Island (Fernandina). You might see a sumarine go by. Hmmmmmwhat else...Dolphins, manatees, are in the area. Manatees being somewhat seasonal usually.
Tons of all kinds of wading and shore birds.
Whale watching is over with for now. The Right whales ( as opposed to Left or Wrong whales <GRINZ> ) stop along the coast here to calve on the migratory route north.

There is also a PRIVATE grass landing strip onthe island.....If you want to make a trip over let me know....I might be able to arrange something. But be sureto bring a camera and LOTS of film or disc space and FRESH charged batteries. And a cooler or pack of whatever you will eat and drink. ( don't forget the bug juice either....Lots of bugs there certain times of the year.)

I heard a story once and only once so I have no idea if someone made it up or if it is true...Anyway The story is that the Timucuan Indians believed a Goddess was asleep under the island and as long as she was asleep there, she would protect the Island from serious storms.
I don't know if that is a true legend or not. I do know many people claim to find Cumberland Island to be a very strong spot. I also know that no major hurricane has ever made a direct hit there. ( at least in recorded history) It may be due to the cut in the Georgia coast.I leave that up to the individual to decide.

St.Marys is an old pirate town. The Spaniards would go up the St. Mary's river to get and take on fresh water before going on down to south America.

Hmm anything else I can suggest or tell you about the area?
I don't know if this link was on that other page that had all the links on it but you will a lot of photos of the Island here:

Let me knowif thereis anything else I help you with.
