Hum....not sure I can recommend Durham, though the Duke campus is very nice.OceanCityGirl wrote:i'm going to take a road trip to see one of my son's spring track meets. Which would be a ? To be honest, I tend to stay out of Durham....too many random acts of stupidity. The only time I go over there is because of one very nice gourmet shop or the occasional Durham Bulls game. (Lots of police presence). They do have one of the nicer and newest malls in the area.
I've never been to Charlottesville though...so I can't compare.

Let me know if you find anything to do there! I am always willing to expand the horizons, and Raleigh can be just as boring at times.MA_Buffett_Fan23 wrote:I say Durham but I'm being biased since I'm moving there...

I guess boring is in the eye of the beerholder but Raleigh has something going on nearly every weekend that I'd love to see. Same for Chapel Hill.Soraya wrote:Let me know if you find anything to do there! I won't deny that Raleigh has lots of things going on..but I find that for the types of live music I like to go see...there isn't much going on. Again, for someone with different tastes...there would be plenty.Jahfin wrote:I guess boring is in the eye of the beerholder but Raleigh has something going on nearly every weekend that I'd love to see. There was always a show or event we were at when we lived near Cleveland...even with the drive we had. I guess it is a bit of a disappointment that we move closer to a large city and lose all that.
Chapel Hill is a different city from Raleigh or Durham. I find that many folks just lump them all together, when each is quite different.

Ch'ville has more historic sites than you can shake a stick at.
Just touring the campus of UVA is pretty cool.
There's also Monticello, the Ash Lawn, Michie (sp?) Tavern, and some other neat stuff.
Good restaurants and shopping abound there.
If you end up going there, PM me.

you spelled it right. Also, if you're into that sort of thing, the cemetary where Thomas Jefferson is buried is right across the street from Michie Tavern. A little farther out, in Ivy, is Boar's Head which is a beautiful estate/meat place/restaurant. C'ville tends to be a bit congested at any time of day, any day of the week. To their credit, they will have a CIP in a few months. C'ville is very much owned and run by UVA, who thinks their "stuff" don't stink. Not a lot of up and coming industry, except for what the University requires.bravedave wrote:Ch'ville has more historic sites than you can shake a stick at.

It's a good place to go on a pretty Autumn weekend. Driving around the backroads (like where Michie Tavern is) can be quite scenic.
If you go, mayhaps we could do a little phlocking while we're at it. Sounds like BraveDave is interested as well.
Don't know much about Durham except that it's pretty when I drive through there on my way to my Dad's. Congested, but pretty.

I can recommend Durham. Every city has stupid people who wear the same color clothes and shoot at each other. Like any city it more dangerous at night. I like Durham. Duke is a very beautiful campus with Duke Chapel right in the center. Within walking distance is Duke Gardens with the most diverse botanical specimens, espiecially in Spring when everything is in bloom. The Durham Bulls start in April, there's the Museum of Life & Science, Bullock's Barbecue, Northgate and Southpoint Malls not to mention Ninth Street. Been down here a year now and I work for Duke Med Ctr. If you come down go to http://www.durham-nc.comto see what's going on...or PM me.Soraya wrote:Hum....not sure I can recommend Durham, though the Duke campus is very nice.OceanCityGirl wrote:i'm going to take a road trip to see one of my son's spring track meets. Not one shred of evidence exists in favor of the idea that life is serious...
Yeah, I guess it's a matter of "to each their own" when it comes to the live entertainment options in Raleigh but I usually have no problem finding something going on whether it be rock, reggae, folk, indie or alt.country.Soraya wrote:I won't deny that Raleigh has lots of things going on..but I find that for the types of live music I like to go see...there isn't much going on. I didn't intend to lump either Durham or Chapel Hill in with Raleigh but they are relatively short distance between each other which makes driving from different events in the same evening somewhat doable.
I'm on the coast but make the drive up to the Triangle to catch concerts on a fairly regular basis.MA_Buffett_Fan23 wrote:Jah, you live in that area?!?Jahfin wrote:I guess boring is in the eye of the beerholder but Raleigh has something going on nearly every weekend that I'd love to see. If you are a James Taylor fan, this looks like a great place to visit.
