A mumps epidemic is spreading across Iowa and the virus may be jumping to neighboring states.

As of Thursday, Iowa's Department of Public Health reported 245 confirmed, probable and suspected cases of the virus. While a number of the patients had been vaccinated, the vaccine is only 95% effective.

College students make up the greatest number of patients but the virus is targeting people of all ages.

Suspected cases are popping up in Illinois, Minnesota and Nebraska.

Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle ache, and swollen glands near the jaw.

State health leaders don't know how the epidemic started.

People are still getting vaccinated.........My son was vaccinated at least twice, once as the usual childhoold vacc, and again when he entered the CG, ......... went to Mexico for spring break a few years ago......came back and we said what's the other guy look like?

took him to the emergency department at the hospital.......and the Dr. admitted that she wasn't sure what it was, needed to call in another Dr., he wasn't sure either, they did a ct scan........radiologist said it was the mumps, when he got back down to the emergency room, the Dr, called in the student dr's and said, you'll probable never see this again, but this boy has the mumps!!!!!

Chicken Pox Strikes Hill Country Town

Chicken pox cases are on the rise in Kerrville. In fact, the school district says there are 41 confirmed cases of chicken pox as of Tuesday, and school leaders expect the numbers to rise over the next couple of weeks.

The most noticeable chicken pox cases are popping up at B.T. White Middle School. There are more than 20 chicken pox cases in this school alone.

Even students who've been vaccinated say the virus is spreading fast.

Experts say one out of every four vaccinated children could get chicken pox.

Dr. Sandra Guerra-Cantu told News 4 WOAI, "Those children who have been vaccinated are not getting the severe complications that we would see in unvaccinated children. So, the vaccine is still extremely important."

Chicken pox symptoms include red fluid filled bumps on the chest and stomach, fever and cold-like symptoms.
