I wouldn't refer to myself as a Parrothead but no, I'm not the only Buffett fan in my family. In fact, it was an older brother that was responsible for turning me onto him back in the early to mid 70s when he brought a Buffett album home from college one weekend. All of my other siblings are Buffett-friendly, some more than others. My parents weren't necessarily hardcore fans either but they did like his music. My Dad kinda had to because Buffett was a near constant staple on the cassette deck when we were out deep sea fishing. He also had at least one Buffett encounter himself when he ate at one of his restaurants down in the Keys back in the 70s. My Dad's co-worker had to excuse himself because the smell of the dope smoke was just more than he could take. When my father passed away in 1994 we played "Captain and the Kid" in his honor. It's still very hard to listen to that song without losing it but it also holds very many fond memories of "life upon the sea" as my Dad was also a Navy man. During my father's extended hospital stay it was Buffett's music that helped get me and my Mom through. If ever I have the opportunity to meet the man, I could never thank him enough for that. My late sister was also a big fan and was turned onto Buffett by the same brother that introduced his music to me. It was because of our shared love of Buffett that she wished I'd grow up to be a sailor someday. That wish didn't come true though I have an undying devotion to the sea, it was another brother that went on to be a charter boat captain. So, yes Buffett is a pretty big part of my family and always has been and will continue to be.

I'm the lone parrothead in my family.
They hate ANYTHING that's fun.
I'm also the lone parrothead at work with the exception of a couple of guys who like a few songs by Jimmy, and that's it.

I am for sure. My wife goes to concerts with me and deals with me singing and playing his songs on guitar, but she isn't necessarly a fan.

I am most certainly the only parrothead in my family. My wife has learned to tolerate it over the years and has even gone with to two concerts. A couple of times her lack of Buffett passion has cost me dearly. A few years back our annual trip fell on a significant wedding anniversary and I really wanted to go (I know, in retrospect not a great idea). One diamond ring later I was there (and you guys all complain about the price to see Buffett this year!). Another year she was 8 months pregnant and didn't want me to go. That one cost me the expense of bringing her on a week vacation to Florida.
I think those two gifts warmed her up to Buffett more so than his music ever has. I do catch her singing along on most of his songs now though. and my 2 year old loves reading his Jolly Mon book with me.

No...I was really surprized when about 9 months ago, Rocky started digging into my JB cds and really liking them. She was like 'why haven't I heard this stuff before?' (Her father is into harder metal....so she hears mostly that.)
Ron...he's not a fan. Tolerates listening to it when we are around....likes the whole 'idea' of it all...but just not a fan. In other words, he 'gets it' but isn't interested other then living on the beach!

We were listening in the car the other day and Caitlin said, "I feel bad for people who don't listen to Buffett.....they don't know what they're missing." Pretty enlightened.....even though the music choices in her room are waaaaaay different than Buffett!
I seem to remember having this discussion with the ex-fiance. She never saw the
magic in "Stars on the Water" to bring a smile.
Thank you for saying that the way you did, R2....
Very nice....
and yes...the only one. Lonely Only.
Last boyfriend thought VanHalen was the only good band to come out of the last Century...
Keets both know a lot of the music...both went to their first concert at the age of 10...
But no one else..
Some "get it" without the music though...and that is good...!

My wife's not really a fan. She'll humor me and listen to JB with me, but after a while she asks to change it. She has been to a concert with me, and she had a good time, and we're planning to go again...
My keets are 8 and 5, and like quite a bit of JB songs, I don't know if I'd call them Parrotheads yet, but they are appreciative of the music. "Take Another Road" is their favorite song.
My dad's the one who got me started. Back in the early/mid 80's (I was probably around 10 at the time), I remember going over to his house (my parents were divorced and I lived with my mom) and listening to his JB cassettes... I distinctly remember the Somewhere Over China and Riddles in the Sand cover photos....

I have known my wife for 6 years...it took her a year or so to become a Buffett fan....then a couple more years for her to cross that fine line between being a Parrothead and a fan.
At work, they just look at me funny! Of course, I have a palm tree on my desk, a picture of me and Jimmy on the wall and RadioMargaritaville playing all the time.

AND...when I take time off to go to a concert, I request the time off for "RELIGIOUS PILGRIMAGE"

When I ask for vacation time, the first thing my boss usually says is "where's he playing now?"

I don't want to scare her off...
Actually, I have no idea what we'd be doing for labor day... It's hard for us to plan anything more than 2 weeks in advance....

Definite high priority on the list for "the man" in my life, when he comes along: must love Buffett!!

What a great story. The first year after my Grandfather had passed away was rough on me. I remember heading to Florida to clear my head. Everyone morning I would get up and take a walk on the beach before the sun rose. I would always skip the cd ahead to "The Captain and the Kid." It was during this time that I was able to reflect back upon the love for Florida that him and I shared.

I'm by far the biggest PH in the family, but before my little sis joined the Air Force, I never went to a concert without her! She arranged her leave so we could go to the Indy show last year. My parents always have Buffett playing in the car, although they're antisocial (their words), so they hate going to shows (although they have been to one).
We almost had Grandma (raised Pentacostal and loosened up to become Southern Baptist) with Banana Wind, until Overkill.

That was Columbus 2 years ago, wasn't it? Maybe they won't go back because of what they saw on the big screen.
