Down To Earth (original Barnaby vinyl) question

Post by surfpirate »

Okay .. so I'm surfing around in eBay (a rather dangerou$ ex$pen$ive habit I have) and I stumble across an auction for Jimmy's original Barnaby vinyl 1970 album Down To Earth up for auction and there was only about 11 minutes before the auction ended and the price seemed reasonable.

Well I always wanted a copy of that vinyl album so I put in a bid and was immediately outbid. Well one thing leads to another and my competative (stupid) instincts kick in and next thing I know I've won the auction at a much higher price than I might have thought I would have bid 11 minutes earlier. Now I don't necessarily regret what I've done ... I still believe the price I paid is more or less reasonable and like the current "debate" over Jimmy's latest concert ticket prices ... I believe that if its something you want and are willing to fork over the $$$ and it makes you happy ... then go for it ... you know? Of course I may not tell my wife about the purchase price :D

My question: I've always heard the quotes that this album "only sold 324 copies". I for one do not believe that figure. I'm wondering if anyone else out there, maybe with record industry inside knowledge can provide a more accurate sales number. I'm just curious.

I'm also wondering what a good value price is on this album for collectors. I wish I had more than 11 minutes to research this spur of the moment purchase, but what are you going to do?

Thanks!

You mean you're bidding against me! :o

Just kidding.

By all accounts only 324 copies "sold" however there were supposedly a 1000 copies printed, so what happened to the rest is somewhat of a mystery. I suspect that many went into cutout bins at stores and were later tossed as the stores decided that they were selling. I'm sure some were given away by the label as promotional LPs but again, I haven't found anyone who can tell me how many of those there were.

I have a copy I bought at a used record store in the Haight-Asbury district of San Francisco. It was a cut-out...the top right corner has been cut, otherwise it was in fantastic condition. I paid $8.99 for it in 1992.

I also found a copy of "High Cumberland Jubilee" a couple of months later in Hayward, also in fantastic shape...not a cut-out. I paid $32.99 for it also in 1992.

Well whoever it was - we were locked in a viscious 11 minute bidding war. My hats off to my bidding opponent (the #@&*% SOB .... I may have to eat baloney sandwiches for lunch the next month to compensate).
