Heading to St. Thomas & St. John on Saturday and I need a great lie-on-the-beach-soak-up-the-sun-drink-a-margarita book. Any good recommendations (besides the Buffett books....read em all at least once!)

I like the Tom Corchran novels set in Key West. They are detective type themes, are all pretty good.

I also just started the Doc Ford series by Randy Wayne White. So far so good.

Blue Latitudes : Boldly Going Where Captain Cook Has Gone Before (Paperback)
by Tony Horwitz "When I was thirteen, my parents bought a used sailboat, a ten-foot wooden dory that I christened Wet Dream..."

This is a great book. Part history part travelogue. Set in the South Pacific going from island to island. Drinking beer and learning history. What more do you need.

Any of the books by Carl Hiaasen or the "Doc Ford" books by Randy Wayne White.

Light reading and usually set in Florida or the Caribbean.

Blue Latitudes is great.

Two others are A Trip To The Beach by Melinda Blanchard and An Embarrassment of Mangoes by Ann Vanderhoof. Both are true stories of people who gave it all up to live in the Caribbean. Great beach reading!

I second the vote for Tom Cocoroan (or however it's spelled, too much rum).. I'm working on "Bone Island Mambo" right now.

And after being 3 weeks into my 3-month gig here, I can certainly recommend while this is a nice place to visit, living here is a whole other story...

My first thought was Jaws (thanx for the pic, Jah).
It really is the best.

Also, Treasure Island, by RLS.
(Jimmy would approve.)

You can never go wrong with "The Old Man and the Sea" (and you can easily read it in one afternoon, including taking breaks for swimming and making rum drinks).

My personal suggestion is "Forrest Gump" by Winstom Groom--the original novel, not the movie adaptation. It's quite possibly one of the most underrated novels written in the past hundred years. It's amazing!

"A History of Pirates: Blood and Thunder on the High Seas" by Nigel Cawthorne is also a fun, educational read. Especially sitting right on the water!
These moments we're left with, may we always remember, these moments are shared by few...
