I teach 7th/8th, but I do not have the patience to TEACH Kindergarten.

Let it go, cause they will still remain stupid long after you have gotten over being mad. :D
Mad lasts for twenty minutes. Ignorant is forever. You win.

Wow. Never thought about it quite like that. My Kindergarten teacher was Mrs. Splitgerber. And I can't name one baby sitter. Great post!! :D

Lisa Elke (my sister's friend's oldest sister.. blonde, kinda cute in an early 70s kinda way). Lori and Lindy (the Brighton twins), and their younger sister Julia... tho I always wanted their sister Amy for a babysitter... and oddly enough, after having moved away, not thought of them for years; I ran into Amy flying out of HLN for my grandfather's funeral in '95 and got to talk with her a little bit (which was more than I probably got to the entire time we had the twins and Julia for babysitters...)

I love the story!! Rock loved her kindergarten teacher as well....she still gets all misty eyed when thinking about Mrs. S......heck, I loved her so much that when we had a difficult first grade teacher (who tried to tell me that handwriting was a direct indication of intelligence (Rock and I both have HORRID handwriting)....that she was the first person I went to!!

I still remember mine....she played a white piano, was so soft spoken, and loved the Hawaiian dresses my great-grandparents would bring me back from their vacations. (However, I do remember my babysitters as well...didn't have many....it was a real treat!)
cold-cock her with a brick, and leave a neatly-printed note... that'll throw them off. :D

For the record, I still remember my first day of Kindergarten. I remember that I went to the bathroom during lunch and when I came back to the cafeteria, they had taken all the kindergarteners to recess and I didn't know where teh playground was and a first grader took me there.

I don't remember the first time I was baby-sat.

And I have your back too. Got a spare can of whoop-ass that needs opening.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words and support...and ass kicking offers too! I really can't believe that I let these two clowns upset me so much, but this mentality really burns me up. It's been a week now, and I am over it, and have seen these two guys a few times since...neither one spoke a word to me, but I guess they got an ear beating from some other people that were around when the conversation took place.

And just for the record (not that I need to "enlighten" you guys, since you "get it"), my students are now able to ace their dictation tests. I am so proud of them! I teach in a pretty low income area, and many of them came to me unable to recognize most letters of the alphabet, and identifying the sounds letters made was almost imossible. They now can read, build words, and write dictation sentences (all sentences are 4 words, and must begin with a cap. letter and end with a period to get full credit). All but 3 of my 32 can count to and recognize numbers to 100. They can also add, subtract, and measure to the nearest inch. In addition, they can name each coin, tell its value, identify what is found on the back of each without looking, and know each president on them.

I am just so proud of them and wanted to share this with all of you who have expressed your support for not only me, but for all of the special educators in your lives. Thanks for letting me both vent and brag!

Dear Island Lullaby,

One of my neices "Ten", is in Kindergarten this year. She has always been considered the "stupid" one. While her older sister excelled in school, she was bored. But thanks to a move and two great KINDERGARTEN teachers, she is finally learning. She is reading on her own, and is in the highest level for her grade.

So I say to forget the IDIOT, and remember the children's lives you touch and CHANGE everyday.

ANd if that fails let Mal ad my brother have at 'em. They won't do be calling anyone names anytime soon. :)

I'd have a hard time naming a high school teacher I had, but I've never forgotten Mrs Bretternitz. Kindergarten is very special to kids. It's the first place you learn how to handle life without your mom there to help you every step of the way.

Ignore the idiots who say stupid stuff like that. They haven't a clue!

Some great comments here, and congrats to Island Lullaby and all the other teachers for the great work you do. One other point that hasn't exactly been mentioned is that kindergarden teachers lay the foundation for school learning for kids. If kids don't get off to a good, enthusiastic start, they may never recover. You basically teach kids to learn in a social environment, and that's so incredibly important.

I think whoever made that comment was either a kindergarden bully or had some other problem with that experience. And, as happens way too often, his mouth was moving but the neurons weren't firing.

Congrats to you and your kids for some great accomplishments this year!

My wife teaches third grade, and there's a small group of people who like to push her buttons by saying stuff like that. I hope they're just pushing her buttons, people aren't really that stupid, are they? I think it's like b|tching about the cable company., post office, gas prices, etc. It just makes some people feel better when they do it.

Life's too short, have another beer. :pirate:

Jen! I'm so glad you were able to find some peace with this. That has got to be the most frustrating part of teaching (the parents). Hang in there, you're doing GREAT!

There's the problem. Not having kids would make them ignorant to the impact a good teacher would have to an impressionable mind...

Granted, there are some bad teachers who just run through the paces, but you sound like a great one... keep it up, and thanks!
