As for the "non-smoking sections"...I should not have to smell smoke when I am dining or relaxing...and even in the Non-Smoking sections, you can still smell it. It literally makes my eyes burn, my throat itchy, and my nose burn...it's just very unpleasant, all the way around. I nearly get ill when I leave a place where someone has been smoking, and my hair and clothing smells like cigerettes. I think you're way way way out there on this one. I drink often enough, but I don't puke with any regularity. But as CaptainP implied, my irrigation is definitely increased.
And I think the analogy (as noted in the above post) is way way way out there too. Ever driven after consuming alcohol? Not the same as driving after smoking tobacco is it?
Yes... but that doesn't mean I drive drunk.

ok, the drawback is this... if you are lucky, you get 15 minutes of breaktime. 5 out to the car, means 5 back, which means you have to s*** one down in a hurry.

Does that do anything to ameliorate your situation.. no, it doesn't. But they don't know any more about you and your situation than you know about theirs.

I am sorry, but there is a limit to which one side (either one) gets to impose their system of beliefs on the other as long as tobacco, cigarettes, cigars and the like are sold legally.

If I went home smelling like ass because someone farted near me I would have a problem with it.....

In 31 years it hasn't happened yet, but 100% of the time I have been near a smoker I have gone home smelling like smoke!

problem is we sit back and allow the government to throw more laws on top of laws they're already not willing to enforce so politicians can say "see? we care and we're involved"

case in point - California has banned smoking in essentially all public areas but as far as enforcement goes...if your car gets stolen in LA the cops will take the report over the phone because they're too busy to come out. So how do you think they would respond if they got a 9-1-1 call from Applebee's exclaiming that there was a deviant smoker at the bar

I hear people say they support it because they don't smoke. You know sooner or later when the money entices, lawyers will go after the restaurant industry or the alcohol industry and on and on. They'll eventually get to something that IS important to you and it will be too late to stop them.

Personal freedom is the core issue here. There has to be a compromise because I agree that you should not be forced to suffer if it bothers you. 8)

Molly I truly understand your stance and your health issues but you also must realize that you are talking about a substance that is just as addictive as heroin and really harder to stop than any drug I have ever been addicted to.

And you also have to realize that not 100% of the people against smoking are like you and face serious health issues because of second hand smoke.

I don't know how many people I've met in life that complained about cigarette smokers but were at the bar every time it opened.

well there you go, you've solved it! I can picture sort of a non-lethal Charles Bronson "Deathwish vigilante" guy patrolling the bars and restaurants of L.A. with fire extinguishers, waiting for the real criminals to come out and show themselves :)

I am a smoker, but I prefer to eat in Non-Smoking restraunts. I don't like the smell of smoke while I am eating, and in general. We don't smoke inside our house, or in our cars.

That said, I think smoking bans are crocks, just one more law limiting a person's freedoms. Let people (restraunt patrons) vote with their money. If someone does not like a restraunt that is a "smoking" restraunt, don't go there. Don't spend money to support it. Don't tell the restraunt owner he has to go non-smoking... Myself, as a smoker, am the first person to suggest going to a non-smoking restraunt, and rather spend my money at one...

A smoking ban was recently defeated in New Hampshire (the Free State), and it was defeated on the principals. The Senators were not focused on whether or not a ban would be good or bad for business. The Senators were focused on the real issues: property rights, personal choice, and economic freedom. There is some really good info on the link below, but just a word of warning to you left wing pansies, it is a site dedicated to personal liberties (Free State Project), that I am a part of....

Connie--I've never smoked....just didn't get it.
Too much $$ going up in smoke--maybe I'm too cheap
So, I've never been addicted to smoking....but wouldn't it be great if everyone that smoked could just give it up today?
I know that isn't going to happen, but it would be great.

Everyone's situation is different and alot of people that are trying to get laws changed/passed have their own reasons.

My FIL died from lung cancer
He quit smoking not long after Ryan was born....it was wonderful!
I could go to their house without hiding in a back bedroom being isolated from the rest of the family. :D
However, he died 20 years after giving up smoking from cancer.
We are all so glad he gave up smoking---he got to see all his grandkids grow up :D
But missed the birth of his first great grandchild by a few months because of smoking.

I believe in letting market forces take charge on this issue. Almost every restaurant/bar around here that has eliminated smoking has seen an INCREASE in business. Here in NH they just defeated a smoking ban (by ONE vote, so you know it will come back). Hell, the best little Irish pub in town just went smoke-free. :D I enjoy coming home from a night out without having to shower immediately.

I also think that busieness owners should make their own choice about smoking. It not only affects who your customers are but who will work for you. I have several friends who work in the hospitality industry who say they will NEVER work in a smoking workplace again. Another form of market forces at work.

No, it doesn't, nor did I even imply that you did. I asked if drinking and smoking tobacco could favorably be compared. The answer is no, they can't. Therefore the smoking vs. drinking analogy doesn't work at all.

I understand the hurt and pain you have felt

but until you realize that it's just not something easily stopped you won't find understanding or compassion towards those smokers that have tried and tried to quit but the addiction is too strong. I would be willing to bet you have no ideal of the cravings your FIL went thru, probably for years.

Personally I wish I never had started smoking.

I would like to stop - and have tried but it's not easy

And judging a person on the basis of the fact that they are a smoker or not is just as prejudicial as judging a person by the color of their skin. NOT THAT YOU DO THAT but I know of people that do.

I admire people that don't smoke - I just wish those that didn't smoke would be a tad bit more compassionate to the addiction of smoking. People show more compassion to a drug addict or alcholic trying to get sober than a cigarette smoker
