Congratulations on your parents' 48th wedding anniversary Penny!
I also have a mixture of very pleasant memories and sad ones on this day. My father-in-law's birthday would be today, except he passed away back in '97. When he was alive, his birthday was the reason for a mini family reunion every year - happy times!
He was one of the Greatest Generation in every sense. A proud veteran of WWII (he never talked about it), he came home from Europe, went to college on GI Bill, worked hard his whole life, married a great woman, raised four wonderful kids, gave huge amounts of his time and energy to his community, and made it all look a lot easier than it was. He loved this country. He was a GOOD MAN.
The Waco and Oklahoma City tragedies bothered him tremendously, and with their anniversaries falling on his birthday every year I think he never quite enjoyed himself as much anymore. As I said, he loved this country.
I hope you don't mind me sharing my memories in your thread, and I will apologize in advance if you consider what follows to be "going off the rails" . . .
David Koresh was a psychopath and egomaniac.
Timothy McVeigh was a misguided fool and coward (this also applies to his surviving militia buddies).
Oh and my father-in-law? He was an AMERICAN HERO.
Cheers.

ABF, you are seriously misinformed about events at Waco.A Balding Fan wrote:no offence to anyone but OKC bombing had to happen, Timothy McVae Is an AMERICAN HERO. He showed our government how easy it was to kill a bunch of INNOCENT PEOPLE (aka WACO)

People always amaze me with their line of reasoning and the end result opinion of that reasoning. Well, maybe not so much as amaze me as scare the living hell out of me.A Balding Fan wrote:no offence to anyone but OKC bombing had to happen, Timothy McVae Is an AMERICAN HERO. Oh, and Penny, congratulations on your parents anniversary!
I love hearing couples making it that many years. My grandparents made it 56 years before my grandfather died, and my parents are at 34 years. Long lasting happy marriages always make me smile

48 years! That's awesome! Congrats to them!
And thanks for posting about the other events....I had forgotten that today was the anniversary of all these tragedies.....and I think it is important for me to remember these things, even though it is hard.
As for ABF, I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said.....

National High Five Day is 4/20/06
NATIONAL HIGH FIVE DAY IS THURSDAY, APRIL 20th
National High Five Day falls on the third Thursday of April each year, which falls this year on April 20, 2006. The holiday originated at the University of Virginia in 2002, and has since spread across the nation, and around the globe.
Imagine that while on your way to class, you pass a dignified looking middle-aged man in a suit. You, of course, are wearing the same underwear as yesterday, a pair of pants off your floor, and a T-shirt with something ironic printed on it. Instead of noticing this respectable pillar of society fifteen seconds or so before your interaction is fated to occur, and lowering your head to avoid his disapproving scowl, you take another course of action. You confidently walk forward, and at the moment of passing, you and the businessman simultaneously raise your hands and wordlessly high-five. The sound of the perfect high five resonates, causing those nearby to silently and enviously take notice. You both walk on, and likely relate the story to whomever you eat dinner with that night. There is no reason why this should not happen with alarming frequency.
That's pretty much it people. High Fives: Lots of 'em. Some might find it easier to comprehend in Video Form. Please click below to watch our NEW National High Five Day Documentary :

Congrats on the Parent's anniversay Penny
MATT - You disgust me with that statement. You obviously know NOTHING about the Branch Davidian compound or the effects they had on the area. I knew someone who was there and left before the tragedy. I had family at that time that lived in the area. David was not the martyr that you or anyone else make him out to be. Those kids were ABUSED by Koresh for a long time before the government set in. All kinds of rumors were flowing around the country communities about the "compound" and some were found to be true. Koresh was NOT a man of God and NOT someone to be looked up to. He was just another Jim Jones.

CONGA-RATS AND KUDOS ON THE PARENTS ANNIVERSARY!!! ALSO HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THOSE WHO WERE BORN ON THIS DAY!!!
(Money)Penny, I wish at least twice as many more Happy Anniversaries to them.
Matt,
I don't know what TM did in his time in the Army and Gulf War I. He may have been a hero there, but, I do not consider anyone that intentionally targets and slaughters/massacres/ murders innocent Children, Women and Men to be any sort of hero.
My empathy and my condolences go out to all that lost a loved one , a family member, and/or a friend.
What happened to the Branch Davidians was clearly wrong as well. Mistakes were clearly made all the way around on both sides.
Blowing up a building and slaughtering 168 INNOCENT MEN, WOMEN, AND CHILDREN in no way is justifiable as a heroic act, and does absolutely nothing to correct the mistakes made at the compound in Waco.
Columbine....I can only say that I empathize with everyone that lost someone to such a senseless and needless act.
I will not mention the names of the offenders. They wanted their "Fifteen Minutes of Fame"
They got more than that and more than enough. They made a change in every parent of a school age child's life, They made a change in every child's life. They made a change in our school system and our teachers. They made a change in our society. Not for the better in my opinion.
Rest In Peace, All that were massacred, and may the pain of loss be eased in those that had family, friends, loved ones, taken away from them in such violent and tragic manners.
BTW sonofabeach, Don't lie to us!!! We all know, with you it is always 4:20 somewhere!!!
