And one final thing I found out today... apparently when she drives places with daddy, he lets her shift it into gear for him. That must be why she was looking for it in the 1st place. :)

And my grandmother would often let me press the buttons in her car (there were 5 buttons on the dashboard, descending from P down to L) so your daughter and I have something in common!

I can't believe you children couln't identfy the PRNDL!!!
But like ejr, I remember the push-button automatic. It was a feature of the Plymouth Valiant, and perhaps others. I actually had my first driving lessons on one of thse. But now I am fonder of my H. (that's a standard transmission... 1-2-3-4 are in the sahpe of an H, although 5th and Reverse are in variable locatins in most cars.)

On "Green Acres" when Lisa Douglas was learning to drive, she pronounced it per-nun-dle. This was way back in the mid-60's.
