Home Improvement Projects.....

Post by pbans »

Let's just say you were rich beyond your wildest dreams......like maybe Jimmy Buffett rich....would you still do home improvement projects.....or would you hire everything out?

We just finished a major renovation of our living room.....re-rocked the fireplace, painted, tore up the carpet and installed laminate....it was a total pain in the ass, but looking at it now there is such a feeling of accomplishment......

Even if we were rich, I think there are some of those things we would still do......I would not, however, ever ever ever pick up another paintbrush.

After what we just went through with remodeling two bathrooms and completely re-drywalling our living room and dining room, if I were rich beyond my wildest dreams, I'd just move anytime something broke.

Or hire it out.

I agree with you pbans. There are fun projects to work on and not so fun projects to work on. I enjoy working on home projects when I have the right tools. Drywall finishing to me is not fun, however I don't mind painting. Sweating copper pipe is not fun, probably because I don't do that much of it. I've wired up my house when we moved in and other that the complicated wiring of triple pole switches, basic wiring is fun. I have no experience at laying concrete blocks or finish concrete so I'd probably feel safer having someone else do this.

I agree that there is no better feeling like doing the job yourself and knowing you did your best.

My parents built their home themselves back in the 1950's and never needed any bank help. They would budget weekly on what they needed and with volunteer help from friends and family they finished the home in about 2 years. Both my parents would tell you that it was a huge pain but well worth every minute. They still live in the same home and would never consider selling. Even when the state wanted to put a road through their home a few years ago they wanted to hire house movers to move the house 100'. The state decided on another route which left my parents house alone.
No quarter given!

I just finished re-grouting my shower yesterday. I looked at it this morning and DAMN does it look good. I did a better job than the professional who originally installed the tile.

When you own a house as old as ours, every project is a home improvement project.

I just sold an old farm house that I lived and worked in for 8 years. We re-did the bathrooms and the kitchen from the studs up. It was always a pain in the butt, but in the end I was really proud of the work I had done. Tile is now my specialty. :D

Please come to my house!!!

We're unexpectedly replacing our kitchen floor (about a year sooner than we had hoped). Figure we'll refloor the entire main level while we're at it.

Yes, it is great to see what you accomplish, but in the end you have to leave the very things that make it special. Last house we did a total cosmetic renovation and some structual in 5 years; and old victorian farm house. The end result, high profit, but every birthday, Christmas etc present I received for 5 years was left behind in the form of georgeous patio and porches (of which I designed) , ordamental trees and shrubs. I get to drive past it and wave now. I must say she is a beauty.

Tile is your specialty now, good job, there is some money to be made there and has turned to quite a high demand craft.

The only way to be sure it is done right and done the way you want it done is to do it yourself.

Hubby and I are in the midst of remodeling a house. We do a different room every winter. Our speciality, too, is tile. I design and he figures out how to make it happen and we share in the labor. We did recently contract out for a new standing seam metal roof, though. That was just a little ambitious for our level of experience.......There's not too much we won't tackle, though.

I'd say within the next year we're going to be involved in a MAJOR remodel of our home. I MEAN MAJOR. Discussion has been made on adding a 2nd story even :o :o

What we want to do, even if we don't add the 2nd floor will require permits and archetectural (sp) drawings, permits the whole kit and kaboodle.

We'll hire a GC for the majority of the work but believe me I'll be there every day supervising the work too

I would hire out the home remodeling stuff and save my time for painting and yard work.

Hire out 90% of it. NEVER paint (though I am painting my kitchen this week...again....lol....I didn't like how it turned out the first time.)

Two years ago we did an 800 sq ft addition to our house....added a family room, laundry room and big master "suite".....best money I've ever spent. It was horrible in the middle of it.....trying to live at a construction site, but it was worth it! Took about 45 days.....
We used a general for that, too....but he was good about letting us do whatever we could to save some money......
If you like your house and neighborhood, it sure was a lot cheaper for us than buying a new house!

That's how we feel about our house. We have a great location and awesome neighbors, just not enough room. We have plenty of space to build additions to the house, so we're thinkin' we may do that.

Like the neighborhood, hate the house right now. Well I guess hate is a strong word - it needs to be UPDATED IN A MAJOR WAY.

We'll be renovating to ultimately sell at a later date. We're in an un-incorporated part of the country with towns with crappy tax bases knocking on both sides of our neighborhood.
