How about making December 25 Jesus' birthday, when we know he was born sometime in the spring and his birthday was moved to the widely celebrated and historic pagan holiday, the winter solstice. Hence "Sunday" becoming the Sabbath instead of the original Saturday. Same deal on Easter, another "remove the pagan holiday by covering it up with a Christian holiday". Or maybe how the Bible refers to Jesus as a Rabbi in some instances and it's a known fact that you have to be married to be a rabbi.....just curious, is it not?
It also isn't a great secret either. LOL. That is common knowledge amoung the Catholics I know and mentioned in their college level theology classes. Heck, any Modern Pagan on the street can tell about the origins of Christmas and Easter...and quite a few others. (You forgot the orgins of Candlemas and Michealmas at the very least.)

I don't know what I think about Jesus being married....it's possible, but there is no proof of it.

The Church just gets threatened easy.
How do you know what I know or what my background is? (Hint I love history and theology....I am well aware of both Masons and the Knights Templar...but the actual history, not wild ramblings of discredited authors.)

If you want to believe every theory, and I admit, some really sound neat, that is fine...but it doesn't make it history.

As with most things, there are many good Catholics and many good things the church has done over time. As we know through some more recent events as well as throughout history, not all has been rosy...the Catholic church has used its power in very good and constructive ways...but secretive, ruthless and disturbing things have happened, as well.

I personally find it rediculous that today's Catholic church singles out things such as this (and Harry Potter)...it adds publicity and creates more interest (as someone else said). To me it just shows the leadership is out of touch on what is important...I just think there are better places where they could be leading, influencing and guiding the church...just my non-Catholic but somewhat socially and globally astute perspective.

The RCC has never made a pronouncement againest HP. In fact, many Catholics I know, rather conservative Catholics even, love it for the morality tale and good v. evil story it tells. Pope Benedict XVI has cautioned things such as HP for Catholics not secure in their faith....but that is not quite the same thing as this call for a boycott.

I don't really see how anyone could construe the Catholic church as an evil intentity within the book. The Catholic Church does contain many mystieries and misunderstandings in its catechism, but unfortunatly people fear what they don't understand. I love my Catholic brothers and sisters.
And the world needs more people like Pastor Brad; thank you for your tolerance.

What has the RCC officially said about the books and movie that singles it out?

I've not heard of anything. There are always people that have personal opinions, but it doesn't make their opinions RCC teaching.

In fact, United States Conference of Bishops in their movie reviews have said the movie is acceptable for Adults and Teens. (This is not official teaching either, but it is an opinion with some weight behind it.)

From the pen of Pope Benedict XVI

As the sixth issue of Rowling's Harry Potter series - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - is about to be released, the news that Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger expressed serious reservations about the novels is now finally being revealed to the English-speaking world still under the impression the Vatican approves the Potter novels.

In a letter dated March 7, 2003 Cardinal Ratzinger thanked Kuby for her "instructive" book Harry Potter - gut oder böse (Harry Potter- good or evil?), in which Kuby says the Potter books corrupt the hearts of the young, preventing them from developing a properly ordered sense of good and evil, thus harming their relationship with God while that relationship is still in its infancy.

"It is good, that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because those are subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly," wrote Cardinal Ratzinger.

Sounds critical to me.

No, I've never read that book. But I have read more books than I can recall on the history of Masons, Knights Templar and every other "secrete society". I form my own opinions based on the various sources I've read, as well as first hand accounts (Being a Mason is a reoccuring theme in my family and a close friend is the Worshipful Master of his lodge). Since none of us were there, none of us now what the exact truth is...but your attemps to readily discredit anything you deem wild ramblings can as easily be said for anything one believes in the Catholic faith. They've spread more lies and killed off as many people as anybody. They were so threatened by the Cathars and their "Perfect" lifestyle, along with the rebellion against the rich and crooked Roman Catholic Church of their time, the Church had the Cathars burned alive.

We don't know true fact one way or the other, but who's to say which author is discredited? At that point in history, secret societies existed because the Church might torture you for coming up with a scientific discovery. Scientists and such were discreted at their time because of common belief...or generally waht the Church deemed threatening. Graham Hancock is discredited for his books on Egypt becuase we've always been taught the Pyramids and the Sphinx were built by the Egyptions around 4,000 BC, even though he can provide astronomical and geological proof that they were actually built around 10,000 BC. So just who decides what theories are discredited?

btw - by saying "you" in that last paragraph, it wasn't referring to you exactly, it was a general statement.

Beware of sweeping generalizations, my friend. "Those people" spreading the lies & killing off people were most likely evil people to begin with... they may have done their malevolent deeds in the name of the Catholic religion, but it wasn't purely the Catholic faith that prompted them to commit the crimes and autrocities... and your examples happened in centuries old cultures, we shouldn't make human behavior associations from the middle ages with what we construct as moral and civil behavior in modern society.

... I wouldn't think people are quite that dumb...
That's quite a gauntlet to cast down. Almost an invitation to the next ***** who comes along.

There are millions of dumb people. And for each and every dumb person there is someone else who is just a little dumber. I see dumb people every day. Some of them don't even know they're dumb. (A regular old dummy may ruin your day, but a ***** who thinks he's smart can make your whole life miserable.)

So knock on wood or throw some IQ points over your left shoulder. Let's all try to make it through the day without a dumb encounter.
