I always thought Gene Hackman was very good at this.
Don't know if it's still on because I haven't watched it in a while, but Bravo carried the show "Inside the actors' studio". It provided great insight into the craft, artists, careers, characters, personalities, etc.

The most profound performance I have seen recently, quite possibly in my whole life, is Heath Ledger as Ennis Del Mar. He absolutely becomes the character......utterly remarkable.

Also agree with comments about Denzel playing Malcolm X and Jamie Fox in Ray-brilliant performances. Phoenix's Johnny Cash reminded me of Elvis much more than Cash-don't remember the lip twitching with Cash.
