Selleck says no to Magnum movie

Magnum PI star Tom Selleck has snubbed the chance to reprise his most famous role in a movie version of the hit series.

A film adaptation of the show, which ran for eight years attracting huge audiences, has long been rumoured, with George Clooney once mooted to play the mustachioed private investigator.

But Selleck insists he will play no part in any plans.

The 61-year-old star says, "I won't be in it and I won't be doing some stupid cameo."

Tom passed on this one because he's playing Tubbs in the Miami Vice movie.

You mean Miami Vice isn't going to be Owen Wilson and Chris Rock?

i am glad he shot them down, but i think its the only way the movie can be credible is with him as magnum.

MYSTERY BUFFS get a double shot of prime puzzlers tonight, each with a decidedly different style.

Tom Selleck returns as Jesse Stone in the third Jesse Stone mystery, based on the Robert B. Parker novels about a contemporary cop whose troubled personal life leads him to become the chief of police in a small New England town.

Laconic works for Tom Selleck.

He doesn't have to say much to project a strong, troubled character, and he slides handily into theskin of Jesse Stone, the creation of novelist Robert B. Parker.

In this outing, Stone investigates the murder of a 14-year-old girl found floating in the lake. The cherubic young girl had already acquired a bad reputation in the two years she spent at a posh academy.

What turned this sweet girl from a straight-A student to the girl most likely to put out?

Stone, haunted by the case, pursues the clues as he brings her killer to justice.

In the process we learn a lot about this quiet man with a ripple of danger. Stone may appear to have everything under control to his co-workers, but those who know him best know otherwise.

"He's a mess," says Selleck in a recent phone interview. "The audience sees a good guy with a lot of bad habits."

Selleck says Parker didn't interfere with the movies, but he did have two requests about the character.

"He wanted (Stone) to remain totally hung up on his ex-wife (who left him) and the drinking problem," Selleck says. "We're not lecturing the audience about how it isn't good to sit at home, brood, drink and call your ex-wife. Most people know it isn't healthy, but it makes the character interesting."

Selleck says what makes Stone a good cop doesn't make him mentally healthy. As William Devane, who plays Stone's psychiatrist in the movie, tells him, "You have a hyperactive sense of responsibility."

Selleck says he's enjoying his return to television.

"It's a great fit," Selleck says. "If I have anything to say about it, or if I become king, there will be 20 of them. We're already developing a script from (the latest Stone novel) 'Sea Change'."

"The ball has been dropped several times," Selleck says, adding there's nothing in the works now as far as he knows. "I tell you what shouldn't be done: Buy the title, spend millions on explosions and then make
fun of it".

I heard him on the Lex and Terry morning show a couple of months ago saying the same thing. Some things are better left alone.

IMHO, the chance for a Magnum movie was squandered long ago, and the time has passed....
