Hey guys,
I'm making my first trip to Cancun in a month. Staying at the Riu Cancun hotel and wondering what are a few must do things there?
I'm planning on hitting Margaritaville (that is a given) and spending most of my time laying on the beach. But what are a few things I don't want to miss?????

I was there last year pre hurricane so I don't know how much is rebuilt.
You could take a day trip to Cozumal we did it for about $40ea, it included bus to the port and the boat ride. There is a small island just off of Cancun called Isle Majaras, we didn't go there but they say it is a great time. Depending on what you like the night club/bar section is a good place for night time fun, Congo Bongo, Big City and many other bars and clubs are there. Most offer open bar for $10-$25, a price you can negotiate with the doorman. Margaritaville there is OK, nothing great compared to others. Just make sure you bring a few US dollar bills with you when you go to Margatitaville (you will see why)

it is in the same plaza as Pat O'Briens which IMO is better because they have a huge outdoor deck on the harbor. The hotel zone is one long road so use the bus system, it is far cheaper than cabs.

You might take a day trip south to Tulum/Xel-ha or Xcaret, we went to Xcaret a few years back and had a great day there....

I've been looking at Xcaret. Loooks like that may be pretty cool. One group wants to see the ruins, and another want to snorkle. Looks like that has both.

Personally I would do Tulum and Xel-Ha as a day trip. You get snorkeling and ruins, and it should be a little cheaper than Xcaret. A tour package to both was around $90 a few years ago, but you can DIY it for much cheaper using buses, taxis, and collectivo's.

The 2 bars inside Margaritaville on the 1st floor have a lot of US dollar bills stuck on it and around it from customers who sign the dollar and stick it to the wall/bar. It's part of the ambiance of the place.

Someone just recommended a trip to Cancun to me because it's very affordable. How did you set this trip up? Through a travel agency? Were teh costs pretty low?
I'm actually thinking...that this might be my vacation idea for the summer, but I was hoping some advice from you all!!! Thanks in advance.

I think we booked ours through Expedia or Orbitz. We found some good deals on hotels then looked them up on tripadvisor.com for reviews and went with the best one. We did not do the all inclusive which most people do, we were planning on doing a lot of stuff outside the resort so we just paid for our own food and drinks. Our cost each for air and hotel was about $800ea for 7 days, we went in February of 05.
I know someone who just went 2 weeks ago and he said they are still rebuilding from the hurricane and only 1/2 the resorts are open but most of the bars and restaurants are open. There is a lot of construction going on though..

Xcaret has a few small ruins, but nothing on the scale of Tulum... If the ruins/snorkling combo is what you want to do, I'm thinking Tulum/Xel-ha might be a better bet.

We went through Apple Vactions. 5 days-4 nights at an all-inclusive resort for 850. Thought that was a great deal. Staying at the RIU CANCUN, most of the reviews from tripadvisor.com say it's a really good place.

Tulum/Xel-ha are must do's! There is also an island off the coast of Cozumel known as Passion Island. I took an excursion out there a few years back. It's a totally natural island with beautiful beaches. They provided ferry and cooked an authentic lunch and supplied all the corona/margaritas we could drink for $40 a person. It was a great day (from what I remember) If you have some time to spend in Cozumel, I would look into it.
