really? I'd love to read your facts. They did say that about Nutra Sweet until they discovered it contained the same material in arsenic.
One study here showed a potential correlation between aspartame and cancer.

The Center for Science in the Public interest issued a lukewarm recommendation to cut back excessive consumption in light of this new evidence.

Then, in a bit of turnabout, the CSPI modified its conclusions:
New Aspartame Study May Allay Cancer Concerns

Statement of CSPI Executive Director Michael F. Jacobson
The new National Cancer Institute study significantly allays concerns raised by a recent Italian study that found that modest amounts of aspartame caused cancer in rats.

However, it's important to note that the people observed in the new study were only 50 to 69 years old. In contrast, the Italian researchers allowed the rats to die a natural death, equivalent to people living into their 80s, 90s, or older. If aspartame only causes cancer in truly elderly people, the new study wouldn't detect a problem. Also, the new study's means of measuring aspartame consumption -- food-frequency questionnaires -- is imprecise. That approach is not capable of detecting small increases in cancer rates.

I think it's safe to say that no study has conclusively showed aspartame to be an agent of human disease. But play it safe. If you consume diet soft drinks with Nutrasweet, cut back to moderate amounts.

Recently from the National Cancer Institute --

"Aspartame, distributed under several trade names (e.g., Nutrasweet® and Equal®), was approved in 1981 by the FDA after numerous tests showed that it did not cause cancer or other adverse effects in laboratory animals. Questions regarding the safety of aspartame were renewed by a 1996 report suggesting that an increase in the number of people with brain tumors between 1975 and 1992 might be associated with the introduction and use of this sweetener in the United States. However, an analysis of then-current NCI statistics showed that the overall incidence of brain and central nervous system cancers began to rise in 1973, 8 years prior to the approval of aspartame, and continued to rise until 1985. Moreover, increases in overall brain cancer incidence occurred primarily in people age 70 and older, a group that was not exposed to the highest doses of aspartame since its introduction. These data do not establish a clear link between the consumption of aspartame and the development of brain tumors."

More information about aspartame can be found in the FDA Statement on Aspartame, which is available at http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/tpaspart.html on the Internet.

I once read an article about how French women eat such rich, fattening foods and stay so thin. It's called MODERATION. And they eat slowly, enjoying their food. They do not eat any low-fat, no-fat, diet crap. It tastes like crap and you have to eat more of it to feel satisfied, therefore defeating the purpose. Moderation is something we here in the US know little about. A healthy diet contains protein, fat, and carbs (sugar). I personally drink only water (and alcohol, of course!), but if I do want a soda, I'm certainly not drinking a diet anything. I'm going for the real thing. If they're gonna get rid of sodas in school, they should replace them with bottled water only.

Hopefully the banning of cereal commercials will be next. Well, not all cereal but the extremely non-nutrious kind aimed solely at kids.

At my school, the head teacher of the PTSA sells candy and honeybuns and it p*** me off. All the kids walk in with candy for breakfast and spend their lunch money on this crap. I've complained but been told it brings in too much money for us to stop. I have to hear the kids complain when I don't let them eat in my class or let them go to buy it. I tell, "I don't support the selling of junk food at school."

Its not just the obesiety that I'm concerned with. Its also all the hyperactivity I see. I know they are middle school sudents, but I think this could be part of the problem.

Oh, and we don't sell sodas. That would be bad.

I hardly ever drink soda because when I was a kid my parents didn't have it in the house so I didn't acqurie a taste for it. If we wanted something to drink it was milk, juice or water. That's still what I drink today. I don't even have any beer in the fridge at home.

I agree that junk food should not be sold in schools. But sadly, I doublt it will have any impact on the childhood obesiety problem. Most Americans know nothing about portion size and we pass that on to our kids. The amount of food that you get on your plate at a restaurant would almost be 3 meals in most countries. We are of the thinking "bigger is better".
That aside, most Americans are very lazy...and get little to no excersize, especially kids with all of the new electronics to keep them sitting in front of a TV screen or computer.
It is very sad to see so many fat kids...but even sadder to know that they got that way, in large part due to their parents and their learned eating habits. :(

VERY well said, Kitty. Especially about portion sizes being three meals in most other countries. So true, and so sad.

there are just too many times the gov has come back years later and said "oops we were wrong about that"

There are too many horror stories on the net that indicate otherwise plus I know several people that quit drinking diet sodas and went back to regular and some of their health issues decreased dramatically.
