1980-something, somewhere outside of Wichita.

I stood on the roof of my UHaul and watched a squall line roll down off the Colorado slopes and across the sea of prairie grass that is Kansas. The sun was shining brightly, almost straight above me, but the slate-blue clouds were marching determinedly over the western horizon. I lifted my camera to try to capture the image -- it was something completely new to this East Coaster. As I looked through the view finder I almost got dizzy, as though I was on the deck of a pitching ship. The wind blew warmly in my face and the grass roiled in green waves that I thought would splash over me. The photo is in my footlocker somewhere, but it really didn't do justice to the scene. That's OK. I have it stored away in the gray room.

That's pretty much all there is to Wichita...
that, and the grain elevators.

I was wondering if these were vouchers for a R/T ticket or vouchers with a cash value?

It has been my experience the the R/T vouchers can be difficult to use, and the airlines will only let you fly on selected flights. I had an experience on Northwest, that would allow me a flight if I gave them my credit card number, but the voucher wouldn't do me any good. I believe the airlines have a selected number of seats per flight allocated for frequent flier miles and free vouchers. On NW airlines I was told the number is between 0 and 6 depending on the flight. They were sure a lot of help... This is part of the reason I ended up in Rochester NY, instead of Rochester, MN... but that's a another story...

The cash value vouchers on the other hand can be used Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere... :D :D :D

NYC, yes. The Today Show to see Jimmy - not unless you want to camp out on 48th St. starting about 3:00 Thursday afternoon. He's one of the few musical guests on the Today Show that actually has fans come to see him, not just tourists who are there to wave inane signs at the camera.

That's what I was thinking. We had free vouchers a few years ago, so we went there to get as far from cold, cold Michigan as we could. We enjoyed it so much we returned the following year. 8)

Don't do the CA coast from now thru July, it's Marine Layer season, or as we call it June Gloom and you can go days without seeing any sun.
What about the Rockies? And as the man said, Grand Canyon is a must... if it is too late this year for the South Rim (gets awful crowded early) do the North Rim, which never is, there's a fantastic lodge there right on the rim, and also see Zion NP and Bryce-- you could fly to Denver and rent a car! In June it is still not too hot. Rocky Mtn NP, Georgetown Steam Train. Leadville, where Jimmy stopped off to have a few beers.

They are R/T ticket vouchers. We were told we can use them any time, anywhere (within the 48 states), but I guess we'll really find out when we try to use them. :-?

Has to be within the 48 states--so unfortunately, Alaska and Hawaii are out, but still--lots of options.

Our only qualification is it can't be some place we can drive to in a day....we want it to be some where we would not normally be able to go to. We're in Upstate S.C., so that rules out a lot of the SE, except the bottom of FL. Just looking for some ideas (and we do have a few already, including L.A. and Vegas)...but I thought I'd ask, where would YOU go?

:D
I would go to Block Island, RI. Fly into Providence. Go the week after Labor Day. Weather is still beautiful, kids are all back in school, hotel/house rental rates a bit cheaper. http://www.blockislandchamber.com/index.html
