How about Charleston?
My wife and I are going to do a four day weekend in early June we think,we're thinking about Charleston since we've never been there. We like historic towns, and we want to stay within a six hour drive, thought it would be ideal. Can anybody give me info, things to do,where to stay, and eat, that kind of thing?

I'd suggest staying at Charleston on the Beach, hotel is oceanfront on Folly Beach. There's a parks and recreation owned pier right next to it- over 1000 feet long, that rents fishing gear. There's a resturant on the pier also, and the pier is kinda the hub of activity on Folly.( Phone # is 843-5886464) Windsurfers, ect also for rent . All sorts of restaurants and bars within a coupla blocks. Folly is a very laid back place. You'll need to walk around the historic district of downtown Charleston, maybe take a carriage ride. There's a great aquarium downtown too. Just remember it's gonna be HOT and STEAMY that time of year.....

We have always enjoyed our trips to Charleston. We've stayed in town AND on the beach..........I prefer the beach (imagine that! LOL).
The one thing I can tell ya........the streets downtown are VERY rough!!!!!!! Walking is the best way to go......love the Battery, as well. There are SOOO many interesting things to see and do in Charleston/Folly Beach.
I think you've made an excellent choice.

Where to stay
About 6 years ago we found a little bed and breakfast called the Serendipity Inn.
Beautiful place with easy access to the beach, small shops and restaurants.

BLASPEMY!!! Savannah over Charleston? That's like choosing Orlando over Miami for a beach vacation. Savannah has reconstructions, Charleston has the originals. (These two cities have a bit of a rivalry going on.)tully mars wrote:Well,I think we have decided to go back to Savannah instead,Savannah has become my new Key West!

No rivalry...Charleston wins...hands down.
Although...even though I lived in Charleston for 34 yrs..I am a little partial to a small island in NE Florida now.....
Ck out Amelia Island on the web if you're looking for a laid back vacation..and history......and well..just a good time....

Agree...
But what about Bowen's Island?
No trip to Charleston is complete without it....even though there's locals that don't even know about it....

I don't disagree about paying a visit to Bowen's Island, or the Anchorline, for that matter, but I still would much rather stay downtown or in Mt. Pleasant, especially if only going for 3-4 days. If I were going for a long term beach vacation, I'd probably rent something on Sullivan's.Prthd119 wrote:PalmettoSon wrote:And if you do go to Charleston, especially if you are going for history, don't stay at Folly, the beach is very crowded, and it's a solid 25 minute drive downtown (the islands are closer).
